Fanomenon is a large-scale K-pop festival that organizers hope will become a global cultural event rivaling Coachella. While the ambitious project has generated excitement for bringing artists from the industry’s biggest agencies together, it has also sparked criticism from some fans, with several questioning its purpose and financial investment.

As per a report by Kookmin Ilbo published on July 27, 2026, the Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange revealed that the inaugural Fanomenon festival will take place from December 2 to 12, 2027. The event is designed as an 11-day celebration of K-pop and Korean culture, combining concerts, exhibitions, fan experiences, business forums, esports events, screenings, and awards ceremonies.

According to organizers, the name Fanomenon combines the words “fan” and “phenomenon,” reflecting the idea that fans are at the center of the festival. Officials share that the goal is to create a large-scale cultural platform that attracts global audiences while expanding the reach of K-culture beyond music.

<template id="also-read-articles-template">

</template>

Culture Minister Choi Hwi-young, who co-chairs the Committee on Exchange of Popular Culture, has described the festival as a new attempt to build a massive K-culture platform. In this festival fans from around the world can actively participate and experience Korean culture firsthand.

JYP Entertainment founder Park Jin-young, who also serves as co-chair of the committee is the one to first propose the project last year. He says the initiative is created to ensure the long-term sustainability of K-pop and K-culture as major industries. He adds hat the festival aims to draw worldwide attention through performances and fandom awards before creating broader opportunities for companies across the food, beauty, fashion, gaming, webtoon, and film industries.

Park also shares that he has envisioned such an event since living in the United States with HYBE Chairman Bang Si-hyuk in the early 2000s. He says he hopes the global K-pop community will one day turn its attention to Seoul every December through Fanomenon.

Despite the scale of the announcement, not all fans welcomed the initiative. Some social media users questioned the project’s budget and whether such a collaboration was necessary. One fan wrote,

“Hybe just wasting BTS money (again)… more than half of the foreigners attending will be HYBE group stans. It will continue through December 12 across two venues, Seoul Arena in Chang-dong and KINTEX Exhibition Center 2 in Goyang.

Concerts at the newly built Seoul Arena will be held over six days across two weekends, bringing together artists from HYBE, SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and YG Entertainment on one stage for the first time. Organizers have also revealed that international artists have been approached to join the lineup, although no names have been announced.

At KINTEX, weekend programming will feature a separate music festival for around 20,000 attendees. In addition to K-pop, the event will showcase genres including jazz, EDM, rock, R&B, hip-hop, world music, and traditional Korean music. During the weekdays, the venue will host fan meetings, production showcases, esports competitions, film screenings, exhibitions, and business forums.

Another key attraction will be the Fandom Awards Ceremony, which will recognize the 10 most influential fandoms rather than individual artists. The ceremony’s top honor, Fandemonium, will be accepted by artists on behalf of their fans.

Organizers expect the first edition to draw around 520,000 visitors, including 200,000 international tourists, while generating an estimated economic impact of more than 1 trillion won. Looking ahead, the festival is set to expand internationally with its first overseas edition in Los Angeles in May 2028, while the awards ceremony will remain an annual event in South Korea. The long-term vision also includes establishing permanent K-Culture Centers in major cities around the world, each featuring a 20,000-seat performance venue alongside exhibition and commercial spaces.

The project also will be a historic collaboration between South Korea’s Big Four entertainment agencies. Their combined roster includes global acts such as BTS, SEVENTEEN, TXT, ENHYPEN, LE SSERAFIM, Stray Kids, TWICE, BLACKPINK, BABYMONSTER, aespa, RIIZE, NCT, and many others, creating the possibility of an unprecedented multi-label concert under a single festival banner.

<template id="post-rating-feedback-modal-template">

Why did you not like this content?

Cancel
Submit

</template>

Was this article helpful?

Thank You for feedback

Quick Links

More from Sportskeeda

Edited by Adrija Chakraborty

Source link

South Korea’s four biggest entertainment companies, HYBE, SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and YG Entertainment have officially unveiled Fanomenon.
