Hunt, who won world 200m silver last year, was looking to become the first British woman to win the Commonwealth 100m title in 40 years. Instead, a sluggish start meant she splished, splashed and sploshed to another silver medal at a sodden Scotstoun.

However, the top-end speed she showed after stuttering from the blocks should give her confidence ahead of the European Championships in Birmingham next month, where, on this evidence, she’ll be tough to beat in the 200m – surely a gilt-edged opportunity to win her first major individual title. The 24-year-old refused to blame the weather after clocking 10.98 seconds, just one hundredth outside her personal best despite the foul conditions.

However, there will surely be a twinge of regret because this was a gold medal there for the taking, with Hunt having beaten the new champion, New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs, in the semi-finals. “My first 60 metres was really, really terrible, so I’m proud of how I dug myself out of a hole there,” said Hunt.

“It was pretty gross on the start – my fingers were underwater, which was a bit novel – but you have to roll with the punches at championships. I think some people would just say, ‘Well, she’s not a good starter,’ but I think I’ve proven indoors that I’m a legitimate starter. I can get it right. Had I managed to execute a lot better in the first half, it might have been a different story.

“I got it really, really badly wrong, but my top-end speed is so formidable, and that’s how I clawed back that silver. It was frustrating in the immediate aftermath, but having a medal is something you can’t really describe. It’s so intangible and almost ineffable. It’s an amazing feeling to bring home that silver.

“I’ve now got every senior major championship covered with a medal, whether that’s in the relay or individually, so I’m really, really proud of those achievements.”

In the last week, seven British Olympic medallists have withdrawn from these Games for a variety of reasons, though most are simply prioritising the Europeans over the Commonwealths. In contrast, Hunt likes a busy schedule. Her 2025 breakthrough season featured a full indoor campaign followed by an extensive, globe-trotting Diamond League programme. She won’t compete in the 200m here but does expect to line up in England’s sprint relay quartet.

Tiktok embed co“It’s really important in terms of my journey as an athlete and my legacy as an athlete,” she added. I don’t want to go on my Wikipedia page in 30 years’ time and just see one or two medals. I want to see lots of medals. That’s really important to me.

“We don’t get much representation in terms of media. We’re not NBA players who are on TV three times a week and everyone’s seeing our faces.” Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme claimed the men’s 100m in a new Games record, adding the Commonwealth crown to his African title.

Despite the teeming rain, he clocked a personal best 9.83 seconds to hold off Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy by a fraction, as Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi completed the podium. Welsh sprinter Jeremiah Azu was the only Brit to reach the final, finishing fifth in 10.03 secs. Meanwhile, Kate O’Connor admits she is struggling to adjust to her new status as the one to beat.

The 25-year-old heptathlete won world silver in Tokyo last year, and a showdown with Katarina Johnson-Thompson was set to be one of the highlights of the Commonwealth Games athletics programme.

In the absence of the double world champion, who decided to prioritise next month’s European Championships in Birmingham, O’Connor found herself comfortably clear of England’s Jade O’Dowda after four events, despite struggling with appalling weather conditions at Scotstoun. It’s a new feeling coming into a major championship with all the pressure on,” she said.

“I’m not the newbie anymore who can surprise people. I normally really thrive under pressure, so hopefully that continues. It wasn’t my best day, but I’m still leading and I’m in a good position. I was really nervous before the hurdles, but it was solid, nothing more.

“I didn’t execute as well as I can in the high jump, and my shot was atrocious. It was just miserable. You can’t blame the weather – you have to cope with the elements in this sport. My 200m was a lot better, but I can’t be complacent or I’ll get beaten.”

Thanks to National Lottery players, more than £33m is raised every week for good causes.
