However, Dallas essentially decided to throw in the towel on its chase for a postseason berth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopsrumors.com\/2023\/04\/injury-notes-heat-sixers-robinson-mavericks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sitting a number of regulars<\/a> (including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvinky01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-08_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kyrie Irving<\/a>) and limiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-08_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luka Doncic<\/a> to essentially a quarter of action.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the Mavericks did indeed lose their game to Chicago, officially eliminating them from the play-in hunt. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/36105747\/kyrie-irving-5-ruled-mavericks-change-course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim MacMahon of ESPN<\/a> writes, head coach Jason Kidd told reporters before the game that the decision was made by team owner Mark Cuban and general manager Nico Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were fighting for our lives, and understanding this is a situation we\u2019re in, but the organization has made the decision to change,\u201d\u00a0Kidd said. \u201cSo, you know, we have to go by that and that\u2019s something that happens. So the guys that are playing, we got to go out there and put our best foot forward, and we talked about that this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the game, Kidd said that the move was less about \u201cwaving the white flag\u201d and more about prioritizing the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s decisions sometimes are hard in this business,\u201d he said, per MacMahon. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to build a championship team. With this decision, this is maybe a step back. But hopefully, it leads to going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he agreed with the decision to prioritize the future instead of the present by sitting players on Friday, Kidd replied, <em>\u201c<\/em>Those are my bosses, so yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kidd confirmed after Friday\u2019s loss that Doncic and Irving definitely won\u2019t be playing in Sunday\u2019s regular-season finale, with other regulars likely to join them on the sidelines (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/townbrad\/status\/1644538020350050308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter link<\/a> via Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News).<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s more on the Mavs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/4392072\/2023\/04\/08\/mavericks-tank-lose-postseason-draft\/?access_token=48618&amp;redirected=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Cato of The Athletic<\/a> observes, one more loss on Sunday would ensure that the Mavericks finish with sole control of the NBA\u2019s 10th-worst record. That would give them approximately an 80% chance of hanging onto the top-10 protected first-round pick they owe the Knicks\u2014there would be about a 20% chance of a team near the bottom of the lottery standings leapfrogging them and pushing them out of the top 10, in which case they\u2019d have to send the pick to New York.<\/li>\n<li>Within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/36111588\/the-end-dallas-mavericks-season-marks-beginning-franchise-altering-questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a separate ESPN.com story<\/a> about what\u2019s next in Dallas, MacMahon says there\u2019s a \u201cstrong sense of urgency\u201d to expedite the process of building a contender around Doncic. Team sources have admitted there\u2019s concern that Luka could request a trade as soon as the summer of 2024 if Dallas doesn\u2019t take a significant step forward by then, MacMahon reports.<\/li>\n<li>Appearing on The Carton Show on FS1 (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheCartonShow\/status\/1643579679142563840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter video link<\/a>), Tim Hardaway Sr. said that Doncic and Irving aren\u2019t leaders, and referred to Doncic as a \u201ccrybaby\u201d due to his frequent in-game complaints to referees. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/mavericks\/2023\/04\/05\/tim-hardaway-jr-quashes-dads-criticism-of-luka-doncic-kyrie-irvings-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Callie Caplan of The Dallas Morning News<\/a> writes, Mavericks wing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardati02.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-08_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Hardaway Jr.<\/a> asked to speak to reporters in order to distance himself from those comments. \u201cI disagree with it 1000%,\u201d the younger Hardaway said, stressing that he views both Doncic and Irving as good leaders. \u201c\u2026 It\u2019s disappointing that I have to come out here and say (this). I love him to death, like I said, my dad. He made a mistake. It\u2019s his opinion, not mine. We\u2019re two different human beings, so that\u2019s really all I can say.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/what-is-going-on-in-dallas-play-in-picture\/id293376147?i=1000607835431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most recent episode of the Hoop Collective podcast<\/a>, ESPN\u2019s Brian Windhorst, Tim Bontemps, and MacMahon discussed Irving\u2019s upcoming free agency, debating whether or not Kyrie holds most of the leverage as he enters free agency (hat tip to <a href=\"https:\/\/basketball.realgm.com\/wiretap\/271084\/Mavericks-May-Need-To-Offer-At-Least-Four-Year-Max-To-Re-Sign-Kyrie-Irving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RealGM<\/a>).
