Tottenham striker Mathys Tel scored a stunning freekick as the London club were held to a 1-1 draw by Sydney FC in a setback to their pre-season momentum.<\/p>\n

Frenchman Tel produced a glorious strike on 29 minutes but Roberto De Zerbi\u2019s team failed to capitalise and Sydney\u2019s new Japanese signing Takahiro Sekine levelled early in the second half.<\/p>\n

They played a penalty shootout, which Spurs won 4-2.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a good goal. I also want to congratulate the team because we worked and we fought to the end, even in a friendly game. We just keep going all the time,\u201d said Tel.<\/p>\n

\u201cSydney played very well on the ball, they played also very well off the ball and it wasn\u2019t that easy against them.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Zerbi used a host of youngsters and gave his top stars a rest after a long trip to New Zealand in their 2-0 win over Auckland FC on Sunday.<\/p>\n

It was a similar scenario at the Sydney Football Stadium, although first-teamers Archie Gray, Richarlison, Tel, Ben Davies, Manor Solomon and Martin Dubravka all started.<\/p>\n

So did Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who has been heavily linked with a move away with Newcastle and Nottingham Forest reportedly interested.<\/p>\n

Among those getting a second-half run was 100 million-pound ($A191m) midfielder Sandro Tonali, the club\u2019s record signing, after missing the first tour game with a niggle, but he made little impact.<\/p>\n

Lively fellow new recruit Andy Robertson was given 25 minutes, making his debut. But there was no appearance from Mateus Fernandes, who moved from West Ham last month.<\/p>\n

He played the last half an hour in Auckland but British media suggested he may have suffered an injury and the Portuguese midfielder was not among the matchday squad.<\/p>\n

James Maddison was another absentee along with Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, and Jan Paul van Hecke.<\/p>\n

With 20-year-old Gray captaining the side for the second match running, Tel and Conor Gallagher both had early opportunities as they dominated possession and moved the ball quickly.<\/p>\n

Tel \u2014 who was brought to Spurs as one of former coach Ange Postecoglou\u2019s highest profile signings \u2014 got the reward with a wonderful curling free-kick into the top corner after Solomon was hauled down on the edge of the box.<\/p>\n

Gallagher almost got another when he hit the post soon after and they went to the break with a 1-0 lead.<\/p>\n

Spurs substitute Luca Williams-Barnett rattled the crossbar soon after the restart, but the hosts hit back against the run of play when Kota Takai\u2019s pass was deflected into the path of Sekine, who rifled home on 55 minutes.<\/p>\n

Tottenham winger Yang Min-Hyeok missed a sitter from close range after a Robertson assist and again with a header not long after, and the winner never came.<\/p>\n

With scores locked at 1-1 at full-time in the Sydney Super Cup clash, a shootout was held to find a winner, and it was the Premier League club that prevailed 4-2.<\/p>\n

Sydney substitute Joe Lacey\u2019s spot kick hit the post, while defender Alex Popovic had his penalty saved by Tottenham goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.<\/p>\n

Spurs replacement Dane Scarlett scored the winning penalty, with his team now switching its attention to Saturday night\u2019s clash at Accor Stadium against London-rivals Chelsea, who were 6-4 winners over the Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

Sydney captain Rhyan Grant said it was \u201cvery special\u201d to play against a Premier League club.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not too often we get world-class teams coming out to Australia,\u201d Grant told Paramount Plus.<\/p>\n
