Then again, it has been quite a few days for the Australian 1500m runner Olli Hoare. Somehow these Chinese whispers have come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Hoare\u2019s good friend Jake Wightman, the Scotland 1500m runner who is staying in the same hotel as the Australians, said: \u201cI am sure I am allowed to say it, he saw someone with a knife. That was it. And now they were saying he was in a murder scene. They\u2019re two stories put together. But we\u2019re joking that he ran out on the track with a stab-proof vest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cGlasgow is like any city. There\u2019s good and bad parts and you see some things you don\u2019t necessarily want to see. But I was never threatened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThere was nothing heinous about what was happening. We were just running through, and there were some characters, and that was it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Asked whether they were carrying knives or not, Hoare said: \u201cThey looked like they were carrying something, but they weren\u2019t threatening us. There was police there. They were breaking up a dispute when Ky and I ran past and we didn\u2019t even think to report it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWhen we came back, all of a sudden I had Jake Wightman and all the boys coming up saying \u2018you\u2019re in the papers\u2019, and I was like: \u2018For what? But it doesn\u2019t just happen here; it happens everywhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe next day, I didn\u2019t wear the team uniform because I didn\u2019t want to bring attention to myself and I think particularly for the women running around, they\u2019re in a much more different position than I am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cAt that point I thought: \u2018Well, it\u2019s better to save the kit because I don\u2019t have a laundry machine.\u2019 I can\u2019t wash everything, and I want to make sure everything looks nice, so you don\u2019t have sweat stains in the race. That was the main thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">At least Hoare\u2019s day improved as he was reinstated by appeal into the final on Saturday. However, he has a major task on his hands against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/jul\/18\/josh-kerr-makes-athletics-history-by-shattering-one-mile-world-record-in-london\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one-mile world record-holder<\/a>, Josh Kerr, the young Australian superstar Cam Myers, and Wightman, the world 1500m silver medallist, who all looked strong in their heats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Kerr was in an especially confident mood after winning his heat in 3min 58.57sec. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a war out there,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the home crowd, it\u2019s our track, it\u2019s our crowd. The rest of the guys want to take what\u2019s ours.
