It is not every day a reigning Commonwealth Games champion<\/a> is asked whether he witnessed a murder in Glasgow. Then again, it has been quite a few days for the Australian 1500m runner Olli Hoare. After competing on Wednesday in the heats of the men\u2019s mile \u2013 when he finished with bloodied knees after being tripped \u2013 the 29-year-old was asked about reports that he had come across a murder scene while out training with his teammate Ky Robinson.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, I didn\u2019t see a murder,\u201d Hoare said. \u201cThe murder that was reported was six miles away and also at a different time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoare and Robinson were heckled as they ran, though, with at least one of those shouting at the pair holding a knife and, as a result, the Australia team have been told not to wear their kit in the city.<\/p>\n

It was thought initially the pair had witnessed the aftermath of the murder of Paul McMinigal, in the east end of the city, on Friday. \u201cI don\u2019t know how that came about because Ky and I were running in the afternoon,\u201d Hoare said. \u201cWe\u2019re running on the river. Somehow these Chinese whispers have come in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoare\u2019s good friend Jake Wightman, the Scotland 1500m runner who is staying in the same hotel as the Australians, said: \u201cI am sure I am allowed to say it, he saw someone with a knife. That was it. And now they were saying he was in a murder scene. They\u2019re two stories put together. But we\u2019re joking that he ran out on the track with a stab-proof vest.<\/p>\n

\u201cGlasgow is like any city. There\u2019s good and bad parts and you see some things you don\u2019t necessarily want to see. Unfortunately, he ran into the middle of that and I hope it didn\u2019t affect him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were having a laugh about it, just because of all the weeks you want Glasgow to look as best, on his first run that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoare was determined to move on. \u201cWe came across a police dispute,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were people walking around saying things. But I was never threatened.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was nothing heinous about what was happening. We were just running through, and there were some characters, and that was it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked whether they were carrying knives or not, Hoare said: \u201cThey looked like they were carrying something, but they weren\u2019t threatening us. There was police there. They were breaking up a dispute when Ky and I ran past and we didn\u2019t even think to report it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we came back, all of a sudden I had Jake Wightman and all the boys coming up saying \u2018you\u2019re in the papers\u2019, and I was like: \u2018For what? Did I offend somebody wearing an Aussie beer T-shirt?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
