The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback would remain part of the network’s NFL coverage without immediately returning to the booth that carries its biggest games.

Studio work would also give CBS greater control over his appearances. A broadcaster calling a live game has roughly three hours to become part of the story. In the studio, segments are shorter, the format is more structured and several analysts share the conversation.

Romo’s personality could work in that environment. He would still get opportunities to break down quarterbacks and offensive decisions, only without being responsible for an entire broadcast.

It would feel like a demotion because, well, it would be one. Still, it beats an outright separation for both sides.

A reduced schedule is another possibility

CBS could also ease Romo back into game coverage without immediately restoring him as its weekly lead analyst.

A reduced schedule would allow the network to evaluate how viewers and advertisers respond to his return. It would also give CBS additional time to judge Watt’s performance with Nantz before making a permanent decision.

Romo could handle selected games later in the season or work during weeks when CBS needs additional broadcast teams. That would technically return him to the booth while keeping him away from the network’s most prominent assignments.

The arrangement would be awkward, but television networks have survived awkward before. They practically run on it.

Romo could land on a lower CBS broadcast team

The boldest option would be placing Romo on the second or third CBS crew.

Romo joined CBS in 2017 and immediately received its top analyst position. He never had to climb through the network’s broadcasting lineup. Returning on a lower team would force him to prove that he can still deliver the preparation and sharp analysis that made him popular early in his broadcasting career.

His contract makes the situation especially complicated. Romo signed a 10-year, $180 million agreement in 2020 that reportedly runs through 2030. CBS would therefore have to decide whether paying an $18 million annual salary prevents a demotion or makes finding another role even more necessary.

None of these options would provide Romo with the status he held before his leave. They would, however, give CBS an alternative to choosing between an immediate return to the No. 1 booth and cutting ties completely.

Romo may work for CBS again. Whether he ever calls another marquee game beside Nantz is now a very different question.

Source link

Tony Romo may eventually return from his leave of absence, but that does not guarantee CBS will place him right back alongside Jim Nantz.
