Glasgow 2026<\/a> was today hailed as a ‘blueprint’ for future Commonwealth Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The event ended with a message to the rest of the world – the new format using exisiting facilities is a “Games changer”. It sold more than 430,000 tickets to show that it was a real Box Office success.<\/p>\n

And Phil Batty, chief executive of Glasgow 2026, said: “We have created a Games that will inspire more nations to host. Probably more importantly, it is one that every nation feels it could host at some point in the next 100 years.<\/p>\n

“The future of the Commonwealth Games was in jeopardy. Glasgow saved the Commonwealth Games but it also reinvented the Commonwealth Games.”<\/p>\n

Jim Kerr and Simple Minds brought down the curtain on the event at the closing ceremony. The Games’ projected cost was \u00a3162.6m compared with \u00a3543m for Glasgow 2014 and \u00a3680m for Birmingham 2022.<\/p>\n
