Western United\u2019s demise has only just been confirmed and already a potential replacement is knocking on the A-League\u2019s door.<\/p>\n

Just a day after the Wyndham-based club was stripped of its licence<\/a>, one of Australian football\u2019s most historic clubs has formally declared its intention to pursue a place in the country\u2019s top competition.<\/p>\n

Victorian powerhouse South Melbourne Hellas has reignited its push to join the A-Leagues, opening the door to discussions over both A-League Men\u2019s and A-League Women\u2019s licences.<\/p>\n

Eight years after being overlooked in its previous bid to join the competition, ironically losing out to Western United, South Melbourne believes it is now in a significantly stronger position to finally break into Australia\u2019s premier football competition.<\/p>\n

The club confirmed on Tuesday it intended to open formal dialogue with the Australian Professional Leagues and other relevant stakeholders over a potential return to the highest level of Australian domestic football.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe South Melbourne should always aspire to compete at the highest level available to us, and we believe the time is right to begin that conversation,\u201d co-president Bill Papastergiadis said in a club statement.<\/p>\n

South Melbourne was one of Australian football\u2019s powerhouse clubs during the National Soccer League era, winning four championships before the A-League replaced the NSL as the country\u2019s premier competition in 2005.<\/p>\n

The club was left out when the new competition was formed and was again overlooked during the 2018 expansion process when it pushed for what was then the A-League\u2019s 11th licence.<\/p>\n

That licence ultimately went to Western United, whose bid included plans to privately build its own stadium in Melbourne\u2019s west.<\/p>\n

Now, with Western United\u2019s licence terminated, South Melbourne has again thrown its hat into the ring.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve built the technical base for a club that\u2019s needed to enter the A-League,\u201d Papastergiadis initially told the Herald Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be submitting documents [to the Australian Professional Leagues] and our supporters demand it.\u201d<\/p>\n

South Melbourne subsequently went further in its official statement, outlining why it believes the club is now equipped to make the jump into the A-Leagues.<\/p>\n

South won the inaugural Australian Championship in 2025 and currently represents Australia in the Oceania Professional League, which the club says has accelerated its transition towards a full-time professional football environment.<\/p>\n

It also remains alive in the 2026 Australia Cup, reaching the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n

Importantly, South Melbourne has no intention of abandoning those competitions should its A-League ambitions become a reality.<\/p>\n

Instead, the club wants to maintain its presence in NPL Victoria, the Australian Championship and Oceania Professional League while adding A-League Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s teams to its existing football structure.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur ambition is not to leave behind the competitions that have been important to our journey,\u201d Papastergiadis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to continue competing in the NPL, Australian Championship and Oceania Professional League while exploring whether South Melbourne can also have a place in the A-Leagues.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will open up even more opportunities for players across Victoria to play at a higher level.\u201d<\/p>\n

South Melbourne believes its existing infrastructure and supporter base strengthen its case, with the club operating out of Lakeside Stadium under a long-term lease and claiming the backing of more than 150 businesses in 2026.<\/p>\n

Co-president Andrew Mesourouni described South Melbourne as a \u201cready made\u201d option for the competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know who we are, we know our identity and we have generations of supporters who have grown up with this club,\u201d Mesourouni said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe there is a genuine opportunity to bring that history, identity, supporter base and growing community to the A-Leagues.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 3000 supporters attended South Melbourne\u2019s Australia Cup Round of 32 victory over Adelaide United in July, while the club also attracted strong crowds during its Australian Championship campaign last year.<\/p>\n

Any future bid would also include an A-League Women\u2019s team, with South Melbourne wanting to create professional pathways from its junior programs through to the top level for both men and women.<\/p>\n

The club has also strengthened its off-field operations in recent months, adding former Labor MP Philip Dalidakis to its board.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1959, South Melbourne boasts one of the richest histories in Australian football, winning four NSL championships and being named Oceania\u2019s club of the 20th century.<\/p>\n

Its list of famous names includes Socceroos Paul Trimboli, Alan Davidson and Ange Postecoglou, with the latter famously coaching the club against Sir Alex Ferguson\u2019s Manchester United at the 2000 FIFA Club World Championship.<\/p>\n

More than two decades after missing out when the A-League was created, and eight years after Western United beat it to an expansion licence, South Melbourne now wants another opportunity.<\/p>\n

No licence has been awarded, with any potential entry requiring discussions with the Australian Professional Leagues, Football Australia and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
