Manchester United<\/a> legend Paul Scholes has urged his old club to hijack Atletico Madrid\u2019s deal for Tottenham<\/a> Hotspur defender Cristian Romero.<\/strong><\/p>\n The Red Devils currently have Harry Maguire<\/a>, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Mart\u00ednez, Matthijs de Ligt and Ayden Heaven as options to deploy in the centre-back positions.<\/p>\n However, De Ligt has been out injured for several months, while Mart\u00ednez has had numerous fitness issues in recent years. Moreover, Maguire has reached the twilight of his career and his existing deal is set to run until next summer.<\/p>\n Yoro, meanwhile, has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League<\/a> since joining from LOSC Lille a couple of years ago, while Heaven is still very young and needs time to develop.<\/p>\n Now, on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast<\/span><\/a>, Scholes has said that United need to address their defensive issues by signing a CB who would be reliable in the Premier League.<\/p>\n The former midfielder has urged Man Utd to sign Romero as he is a very good defender. Although the Argentinian has disciplinary issues, a calm coach like Michael Carrick might help him become more mature. Scholes even claims that if Man Utd sign the South American, the fans might like his character.<\/p>\n He said:<\/p>\n \u201cI think centre-half is probably the biggest [area that needs addressing]. United should sign] Cristian Romero from Tottenham. I know it might sound stupid, but I just think\u2026 I like him. I think he\u2019s a nutcase.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s a very good defender that does some stupid things. He is an absolute clown. But I think if someone could get hold of him, like Michael Carrick, who is very calm and relaxed, he might be able to [help him].\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Romero is a technically gifted right-footed centre-back. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.<\/p>\n The 28-year-old showcased his qualities last term, although Tottenham endured a disappointing campaign, scoring six goals and registering three assists in 32 appearances across all competitions. Moreover, he helped his side keep eight clean sheets.<\/p>\n The former Juventus man, valued at around \u00a343m by Transfermarkt<\/span><\/a>, has enjoyed great success with Argentina at the international stage over the last few years, winning a World Cup and two Copa America.<\/p>\n Romero is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd should they purchase him.<\/p>\n\n
