And of course I\u2019m monitoring the spoke hole with the broken socket<\/a>:<\/p>\n

For all I know it\u2019s been that way for years, plus there are 31 more spokes should that one pull through, and being a non-drive side spoke it\u2019s under less tension anyway, so hopefully the rim can withstand all those DFUs<\/a> even in its slightly compromised state:<\/p>\n

Also, isn\u2019t a spoke under the most tension when the wheel is not<\/em> being ridden? That means riding it as much as possible would be the best way to avoid failure.*<\/p>\n

And if you\u2019re wondering who Accell Group is, they own a bunch of bike brands:<\/p>\n

Accell is the owner of the bike and e-bike brands Raleigh, Haibike, Winora, Ghost, Batavus, Koga, Lapierre, Sparta, Babboe, and Carqon, and the P&A brand XLC. This year Accell divested two of its brands,\u00a0selling its titanium frame brand, Van Nicholas, to the Italian cargo brand Velo-ce, and its Nishiki bike brand to Turkey\u2019s Kron Bicycle (In the U.S., Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods continues to own rights to the Nishiki brand).<\/em><\/p>\n

But while I may be able to answer that question, I cannot answer this one:<\/p>\n

What the hell do we need all these bike brands for, anyway?<\/em><\/p>\n

Take Nishiki, for example\u2013now owned by Kron Bicycle, except for here in Canada\u2019s Beaded Seat Cushion, where it remains the property of Dork\u2019s Sporting Goods. Now consider that Kron will sell you all sorts of different bicycles, such as this gravel bike, which costs 58,000 squiggly things<\/a>:<\/p>\n

I have no idea if 58,500 squiggly things is a lot or a little, but it really doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n

Anyway, I have no issue with anyone who rides a Nishiki, and in fact I myself am a proud Nishiki owner:<\/p>\n

Actually, that\u2019s not true. I mean I do own a Nishiki, but I\u2019m not proud, and I\u2019m always thinking about removing the decals. Also, any value it has is derived from the fact that it was in fact made by Viner.<\/p>\n

So why in the world would any company pay money to use the name Nishiki in 2026? What association does this have for anybody shopping for a bike today? Wouldn\u2019t it be cheaper to just think up a name for free and use that? As long as it\u2019s not something horrible that\u2019s going to embarrass the owner what difference does it make, anyway?<\/p>\n

I mean someone looking for a bike in Istanbul or in Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods or wherever else fine Nishikis are sold isn\u2019t going to not<\/em> buy a bike because it\u2019s a Nishiki, but they\u2019re also not going to buy a bike because<\/em> it\u2019s a Nishiki. They\u2019re going to buy it because it\u2019s a bike. Plus, even in their heyday it\u2019s not like Nishiki was some coveted, storied brand; it was mediocre even then, locked in a head-to-head battle with Univega over who could be the most adequate while having the least cachet. That\u2019s why nobody in the world goes, \u201cOooh, look at that, a genuine Nishiki, name your price!\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods, if they\u2019re going to pay good money to use old brands\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026THEN WHY WOULDN\u2019T THEY USE THIS ONE?!?!?<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s Raleigh, which actually, was a storied brand, and for people old enough to remember evokes images like this:<\/p>\n

Sure enough, the gravel concept took off\u2026but Raleigh didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
