(Minimum five Tests)

#5 Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar did not have a great career as captain, unlike as a batter. He led India against Sri Lanka in five Tests in 1997. They first toured the Island nation, where they played two Tests, both of which ended in a draw.

In the same year, Sri Lanka returned for a reverse tour, where both teams played three Tests. Sachin led in this series as well, despite the likes of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid being in the team. All three Tests of this series were also drawn.

Therefore, Tendulkar has a win and loss percentage of 0 and a 100% draw percentage.

#4 Kapil Dev

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain led India in six Tests against Sri Lanka between 1985 and 1987. He won just two, with one loss and three draws. During their tour to Sri Lanka in 1985, the three-match Test series ended 0-1 in favor of the hosts. The first and last Tests were drawn, while Sri Lanka won the second by 149 runs.

Sri Lanka then returned for three Tests in 1987, with Kapil Dev’s men avenging their loss from their 1985 tour, winning the series 2-0. The first game was drawn, while the hosts won the next two by an innings and 106 runs, and an innings and 67 runs, respectively.

Kapil thus has a win, loss, and draw percentage of 33.33, 16.66, and 50%, respectively.

#3 MS Dhoni

2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy-winning captain MS Dhoni led India in six Tests against the Island nation. He managed three wins, one loss, and two draws. During the three-match home series in 2009, the first Test was drawn, while the hosts won the second Test by an innings and 144 runs and the third by an innings and 24 runs.

A year later, in 2010, Dhoni and his troops toured Sri Lanka, where they played three Tests. The hosts won the opening Test by 10 wickets. While the second game was drawn, the visitors bounced back with a five-wicket win in the final Test to level the series 1-1.

Dhoni ended with a win, loss, and draw percentage of 50, 16.66, and 33.33%, respectively.

#2 Mohammad Azharuddin

Mohammad Azharuddin captained India in eight Tests against Sri Lanka between 1990 and 1999. He had a brilliant record, winning five Tests and managing three draws. During Sri Lanka’s tour to India in 1990, the hosts won the only Test by an innings and eight runs. In 1993, Azharuddin and Co. drew two Tests and won one by 235 runs in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka returned for a three-match series during their 1993/94 tour, where they suffered a 0-3 whitewash, with Azharuddin guiding the hosts to a stellar series victory. During the 1998/99 Asian Test Championship, the two nations met once again, with their only meeting ending in a draw.

Azharuddin has a win, loss, and draw percentage of 62.5, 0, and 37.5%, respectively. His win percentage is the second-highest for an Indian captain in Tests against Sri Lanka (minimum five).

#1 Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is the Indian captain with the highest win percentage against Sri Lanka in Tests (minimum five). He led in nine games between 2015 and 2017, winning six, with one loss and two draws.

During the 2015 tour to Sri Lanka, he led the visitors to a 2-1 series victory. The hosts won the first Test by 63 runs. However, Kohli and Co. bounced back with a 278-run and 117-run win in the second and third Tests, respectively. When they returned in 2017, Kohli and his men trashed Sri Lanka 3-0. Sri Lanka also toured India in the same year. The three-match Test series was won 1-0 by the hosts.

Therefore, Kohli ended with a win, loss, and draw percentage of 66.7, 11.11, and 22.22%, respectively.

<template id="post-rating-feedback-modal-template">

Why did you not like this content?

Cancel
Submit

</template>

Was this article helpful?

Thank You for feedback

Quick Links

More from Sportskeeda

Edited by Rishab Vm

Source link

India are set to take on Sri Lanka in a two-match away Test series.
