Further details of the incident have yet to be disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"ecom-root\"\/>\n<p id=\"elk-1a373274-9804-11f1-ad8b-77fcc788f886-2\">Race organisers were quick to confirm the neutralisation of the stage, later announced that no racing would take place for the remainder of the day and podium ceremonies were also cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of neutralisation, breakaway riders Afonso Silva (Tavira-Cr\u00e9dito Agr\u00edcola), Hugo Nunes (Credibom-LA Alum\u00ednios-Marcos Car) had a 40-second advantage over the peloton, led by UAE Team Emirates-XRG and the Anicolor-Campicorn team of race leader Alexis Gu\u00e9rin.<\/p>\n<p>Both the breakaway pair and the peloton soon slowed to a crawl behind race organisation cars as the news spread through the peloton and beyond, and the race convoy continued to the finish line.<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-recirculation-type=\"inline\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Trending Bar\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-2 pb-0 mb-4\">\n        <span class=\"&#10;            flex&#10;            after:content-[''] after:flex-1 after:ml-4 after:my-[0.7rem] after:border-t after:border-solid after:border-t-[#ccc]&#10;            before:content-[''] before:flex-1 before:mr-4 before:my-[0.7rem] before:border-t before:border-solid before:border-t-[#ccc]&#10;            font-article-heading pb-0 text-[length:var(--article-river-title--font-size,1em)] uppercase sm:text-[length:var(--article-river-title--font-size,0.875em)] font-bold&#10;        \"><br \/>\n            You may like<br \/>\n        <\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Tarling&#8217;s NSN teammates \u2013 Alvaro Garc\u00eda, Zac Marriage, Ben Morin, Emil Nielsen, and Alex Hewes \u2013 rode together towards the rear of the peloton, before later moving to the front of the group and leading the race in the final kilometres of the stage and across the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, the stage got off to a fast start as attackers tried time and again to go clear at the front. Txomin Juaristi (Euskaltel-Euskadi), as was Jos\u00e9 Neves (GI Group Holding-Simoldes UDO) \u2013 like Costa also on the attack during stage 7 \u2013 who lay fifth overall in the GC standings.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Neves \u2013 4:29 off the race lead \u2013 being in the move, their advantage quickly hit two minutes as UAE took up the pacemaking, looking to protect the third place overall of stage 7 winner Adri\u00e0 Pericas.<\/p>\n<p>Anicolor-Campicarn eventually contributed to the pacemaking, too, with the hilltop finish in Fafe in their sights. The finish, used yearly at the Volta, has seen victories by modern race legends including Gustavo C\u00e9sar Veloso, Rui Sousa, and C\u00e2ndido Barbosa, and both Gu\u00e9rin and Nych will have been eyeing it.<\/p>\n<p>Racing into the final 40km, the two teams had cut the gap to a minute, and so Afonso Silva and Hugo Nunes set off in search of glory at the front.<\/p>\n<p>Behind them, the rest of the break was caught, while further back, tragedy was unfolding as Tarling lost his life.
