After bowling Australia out for just 198 in the first innings, the visitors posted a massive 426 to take a 228-run first-innings lead in the opening Test.

It is a position very few would have predicted before the start of the match. Australia were playing at home with Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon in their bowling attack, but Bangladesh have dominated the first half of the Test.

The Bangladesh 228-run lead against Australia has now put them in a commanding position to push for a historic Test victory on Australian soil.

Bangladesh Take 228-Run Lead Against Australia

Bangladesh were finally bowled out for 426 in 138 overs, shortly after lunch on Day 3, taking a lead of 228 runs over Australia’s first-innings total of 198.

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood was the standout bowler. The experienced pacer finished with 6 for 89 and also completed 300 Test wickets when he dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

However, by the time Australia managed to take the final Bangladesh wicket, the damage had already been done.

Bangladesh had batted for 138 overs and built a lead that completely changed the situation of the Test.

Australia’s Last Such First-Innings Deficit at Home Came Against India

The size of Bangladesh’s advantage becomes even more impressive when we look at Australia’s recent home Test record.

The last time Australia conceded a first-innings deficit of more than 200 runs at home was against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2019.

India had declared their first innings at 622 for 7, with Cheteshwar Pujara scoring 193 and Rishabh Pant making an unbeaten 159. Australia were then bowled out for 300, giving India a huge 322-run first-innings lead.

Australia were forced to follow on in that match — the first time they had been asked to follow on at home since England did so in 1988.

Now, more than seven years later, Bangladesh have managed to build another 200-plus first-innings advantage against Australia in Australia.

Considering Australia’s strength at home, this is a remarkable achievement for Bangladesh.

Tanzid Hasan Tamim Plays an Innings to Remember

The biggest batting performance of the innings came from 25-year-old Tanzid Hasan Tamim.

Playing only his second Test, Tanzid scored a superb 101 from 197 deliveries. It was not only his maiden Test hundred but also the first Test century by a Bangladesh batter on Australian soil.

The importance of the innings becomes even greater considering the attack he was facing.

Australia had Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc operating with the pace attack, while Lyon provided the spin option. Tanzid, however, showed patience and control to play the biggest innings of his young Test career.

He also shared important partnerships with Mominul Haque and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, allowing Bangladesh to move ahead of Australia’s total and then build a substantial lead.

Shanto’s 84 Keeps Bangladesh in Control

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also played a major role with the bat.

Shanto scored 84 and put together a crucial 93-run partnership with Tanzid. His innings ensured Bangladesh did not lose momentum after getting themselves into a strong position.

Mominul Haque also contributed 49 and added another important partnership with Tanzid.

Bangladesh’s approach was impressive because they did not simply look to get past Australia’s 198. Once they took the lead, they continued batting patiently and forced Australia’s bowlers to spend a long time in the Darwin heat.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 65 Makes the Lead Even Bigger

Australia had an opportunity to restrict the damage when they picked up wickets with the second new ball on Day 2.

However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz once again showed his value with the bat.

Miraz scored 65 and worked with the lower order to stretch Bangladesh’s total to 426.

At the end of Day 2, he was unbeaten on 32 and Bangladesh were 351 for 6. On the third morning, he continued the same job and helped Bangladesh add another 75 runs to their total.

His contribution was extremely important because there is a huge difference between taking a lead of around 150 and forcing Australia to start their second innings 228 runs behind.

Hasan Mahmud Set Up Bangladesh’s Dominance

Bangladesh’s batting performance would not have carried the same weight without the outstanding work done by Hasan Mahmud in Australia’s first innings.

The fast bowler produced career-best figures of 6 for 55, helping Bangladesh dismiss Australia for only 198.

It was the first five-wicket haul by a Bangladesh bowler in a Test in Australia and a performance that gave the visitors control of the match from the opening day.

Steve Smith’s 71 was the main resistance for Australia, but Hasan kept striking and ensured the home side never managed to build a big total.

His six-wicket haul gave Bangladesh’s batters the opportunity, and they took full advantage of it.

Bangladesh Have a Huge Opportunity to Create History in Darwin

Bangladesh could hardly have asked for a better position after the completion of both teams’ first innings.

Australia 198. Bangladesh 426.

A 228-run lead for the visitors.

There is still plenty of cricket left in the Test, and Australia remain a very experienced side, especially in home conditions. Bangladesh will therefore know that the job is not finished.

However, they have already achieved something special.

Hasan Mahmud’s 6 for 55 started it. Tanzid Hasan’s historic 101 pushed Australia further behind. Shanto’s 84 strengthened Bangladesh’s position before Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 65 with the lower order turned a big advantage into a mammoth one.

The Bangladesh 228-run lead against Australia has given them a genuine opportunity to register one of the biggest Test victories in their cricket history.

Now the challenge is to finish the job.

Source link

Bangladesh have done the unthinkable in Darwin.
