Both England pacers finished with five-wicket hauls as Pakistan struggled to find an answer against the moving ball.

Robinson finished with figures of 5/51, while Tongue returned 5/46. Abdullah Shafique was Pakistan’s main resistance with a fighting 61, but apart from a brief period of stability, England remained in control.

Pakistan Batting Collapse Against England Starts From First Ball

Pakistan could hardly have made a worse start to their innings.

Robinson struck with the very first delivery of the Test, trapping Azan Awais lbw for a golden duck. It immediately gave England the start they wanted and put Pakistan under pressure.

The dismissal was also a rare one in Pakistan’s Test history, with a Pakistan batter falling to the opening delivery of a Test for the first time in 43 years.

Pakistan’s problems did not end there. Shan Masood and Saud Shakeel also failed to make a significant contribution as England’s pacers continued to ask questions with their line and movement.

There was enough help available for the fast bowlers, but Pakistan’s technique against the moving ball was also a concern. Several batters looked uncomfortable and failed to spend enough time at the crease.

Abdullah Shafique Leads Pakistan’s Fightback

If there was one Pakistan batter who looked comfortable for a long period, it was Abdullah Shafique.

Shafique played a fine knock of 61 and showed the patience required in difficult batting conditions. He was prepared to leave deliveries outside off stump and waited for scoring opportunities instead of trying to force the game.

Imam-ul-Haq also provided some resistance, and his partnership with Shafique briefly gave Pakistan hope of recovering from their poor start.

At that stage, a total around 250 or even closer to 300 looked possible if Pakistan could build on the partnership.

However, once the partnership was broken, the innings completely changed.

Shafique eventually received an excellent delivery from Robinson that found its way through his defence. There was very little the Pakistan batter could have done against a ball of that quality.

His dismissal opened the door for England once again.

Pakistan Middle Order Fails to Handle England Pacers

Pakistan’s biggest disappointment was the lack of resistance after their recovery.

Once England broke the important partnership, wickets started falling regularly. The middle and lower order could not build another meaningful stand, and Pakistan went from looking capable of posting a competitive total to being bowled out for 171.

Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha were among the batters Pakistan would have expected to provide some stability, but England’s pacers did not allow the visitors to settle.

This was where Pakistan’s technical problems became clearly visible.

Batting in England is never easy when the ball is moving. However, Test batting in these conditions requires patience, good judgement outside off stump and the willingness to fight through difficult periods.

Pakistan did not show enough of that after their main partnership was broken.

Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue Share All 10 Wickets

Robinson and Tongue could hardly have asked for a better performance.

Robinson did the early damage and immediately put Pakistan under pressure with the wicket of Azan Awais from the first ball. He continued to attack the Pakistan top order and eventually completed his five-wicket haul.

Tongue was equally effective and made sure Pakistan could not recover later in the innings.

The two England pacers remarkably shared all 10 wickets between them.

Ollie Robinson: 5/51

Josh Tongue: 5/46

Their combined effort meant England did not need another bowler to take a wicket as Pakistan were dismissed for 171.

Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue were in complete control, sharing all 10 wickets between them to fold Pakistan for just 171 🔥

Ollie Robinson: 5/51
Josh Tongue: 5/46 pic.twitter.com/1rIKDlYllS

— CricInformer (@CricInformer) August 19, 2026

Pakistan Have Plenty to Think About After 171 All Out

The Pakistan batting collapse against England has once again raised questions about their ability to handle high-quality pace bowling in difficult overseas conditions.

The conditions certainly helped Robinson and Tongue, but Pakistan will know that they could have shown more patience.

Shafique showed that runs were possible if a batter was prepared to spend time at the crease. His innings was comfortably Pakistan’s best effort and gave the visitors some hope before another collapse followed.

Pakistan’s bowlers now have a major responsibility. With only 171 runs on the board, they need early wickets and an exceptional bowling performance to bring their team back into the contest.

There is still plenty of cricket left in the Test, and Pakistan have produced unpredictable performances many times before. However, their first task will be to make sure England do not build a commanding first-innings lead.

For Pakistan’s batters, the lesson from the first innings is quite clear: in English conditions, technique alone is not enough. Patience, discipline and the willingness to fight through difficult spells are equally important.

A relentless bowling display from England’s pace duo as Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue share all 10 wickets between them to fold Pakistan for 171 in just 48.1 overs🏏

📷: SonyLiv pic.twitter.com/BFADG3Tqrr

— CricInformer (@CricInformer) August 19, 2026

Source link

Pakistan’s batting unit had a forgettable outing on the opening day of the first Test against England at Headingley as the visitors were bowled out for just 171.
