Being established in 1888, Everton boast a very rich history in English football, winning numerous trophies. But have you ever wondered why, and how, that became their nickname?<\/p>\n<p>There are a few reasons, but legend has it that a toffee shop located in Everton village called Mother Noblett\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The store was based between Everton Brow and Brow Side, which is opposite the Everton lock up which is the castle depicted on their badge. Which brings us to, why Everton are nicknamed Toffees.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why Toffees?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Though \u201cThe Blues\u201d has taken hold in recent years, <span style=\"color: navy;\"><b><em>The Toffees<\/em><\/b><\/span> (or <span style=\"color: navy;\"><b><em>The Toffeemen<\/em><\/b><\/span>) is the established and traditional nickname for Everton FC. It originated very early in the history of the club, by association with not one but <b><em>two<\/em><\/b> local Toffee Shops that figured in Everton\u2019s early history:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: navy;\"><b><em>Ye Anciente Everton Toffee House<\/em><\/b> <\/span>was located within a \u201cmint ball\u2019s throw\u201d of the Queen\u2019s Head Hotel in Village Street, where much of Everton\u2019s early development as a Football Club occurred.\u00a0 The Toffee House was\u00a0the operation of <em><b>Old Ma Bushell<\/b><\/em>, who was the original Toffee Lady, and actually invented <b>Everton Toffees<\/b>.\u00a0 This confectionery was sold in huge quantities to the hungry hordes as they journeyed from far and wide to watch Everton play in the new Football League, firstly in Stanley Park, and Priory Road. \u00a0Then at Anfield, Everton\u2019s third ground.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Any changes in this line-up? Guess it\u2019s a no \ud83e\udd79<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Ronaldo?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Ronaldo<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Messi?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Messi<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ChatGPT?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#ChatGPT<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8vZfjbamaT\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/8vZfjbamaT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 FootTheBall FC (@FootTheBallFC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FootTheBallFC\/status\/1642123979359162369?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 1, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: navy;\"><b><em>Mother Nobletts Toffee Shop<\/em><\/b> <\/span>was located near Goodison Park, and figured prominently after the move from Anfield in 1892.\u00a0 Old Mother Nobletts was placed on the horns of a dilemma when that momentous decision was taken to move the great club from Anfield to the new Goodison Park.\u00a0 But, being the mother of innovation, Mrs Nobletts hit upon a great\u00a0idea as direct competition for the Everton Toffees patented by her arch rival,\u00a0Old Ma Bushell.\u00a0 Mother Nobletts invented <b>Everton Mints<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Everton Mints were a great success with the crowd. \u00a0The black-and-white stripes of the new sweets reflected an older strip that Everton had worn some years earlier\u2026\u00a0 Meanwhile, sales of Everton Toffee from <em>Ye Anciente Everton Toffee Shop<\/em> declined rapidly, mainly due the long distance that now separated Old Ma Bushell\u2019s tasty goods from the crowds milling around Goodison Park.<\/p>\n<p>Not to be outdone by the inventive Mrs Nobletts, Old Ma Bushell pulled a masterstroke of marketing acumen.\u00a0 She gained permission from the leaders of the Club to distribute her Everton Toffees to the crowd inside the ground as they waited patiently for the kick-off. \u00a0Her beautiful young granddaughter, Jemima Bushell, was persuaded to perform this honourable task. \u00a0She dressed in her best finery, and donned a broad hat before carrying around her basket laden with individually wrapped Everton Toffees.<\/p>\n<p>And so was born the tradition of the Everton Toffee Lady, a pre-match feature at Goodison Park that has lasted remarkably well down the years. \u00a0In previous years, one Toffee Lady did the job week-in, week-out: Mary Gorry fulfilled this role in the mid-Fifties.\u00a0 Nowadays, for each home match, a different teenage girl is selected\u00a0from the ranks of Everton\u2019s Supporters Club to perform this time-honoured task.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Toffees history<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Everton FC started off as a church team \u2013 the team of St Domingo\u2019s FC formed in 1878, two years after the church had established a cricket club.\u00a0 The church happened to be in the Liverpool district of Everton, which was then an affluent merchants\u2019 suburb.\u00a0 Within a year, the club changed its name to <b><em>Everton<\/em><\/b> as it was attracting the interest of \u201cfolk beyond the church\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The November 1879 decision was made at a meeting held in the Queen\u2019s Head Hotel, Village Street, which was coincidentally situated very close to \u201c<em>Ye Ancient Everton Toffee House<\/em>\u201c. \u00a0From there the club was always going to be referred somewhere to a candy or Toffee and so it has been.<\/p>\n<p>The modern-day Toffee Lady mascot, a young girl in a blue and white dress who throws sweets to the crowd before every home match, is a nod to that tradition.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><script  data-wpmeteor-after=\"REORDER\" type=\"javascript\/blocked\" data-wpmeteor-type=\"text\/javascript\" >\n!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s)\n{if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function(){n.callMethod?\nn.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments)};\nif(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0';\nn.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0;\nt.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0];\ns.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)}(window, document,'script',\n'https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/fbevents.js');\nfbq('init', '785958352266285');\nfbq('track', 'PageView');\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foottheball.com\/explainer\/why-everton-called-toffees-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to why Everton are nicknamed the Toffees, obviously candy is involved.
