After undergoing gender-affirming surgery in Thailand in March 2026, one of the biggest questions around her was simple: Can Anaya Bangar play women’s cricket?

We now have a clearer answer, at least as far as Australian domestic cricket is concerned.

Cricket Australia has allowed Anaya to play Community Cricket immediately. However, there are separate conditions for Elite Cricket, which includes competitions such as the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

Anaya Bangar Gets Clearance From Cricket Australia

According to The Indian Express, Anaya had written to Cricket Australia in June seeking clarity over her eligibility to participate in women’s cricket.

Cricket Australia has now confirmed that she can participate in Community Cricket in Australia.

This means Anaya can resume playing competitive cricket rather than waiting for another governing body to provide clarity over her future.

Under Cricket Australia’s guidelines, transgender and gender-diverse players can participate in Community Cricket in accordance with their gender identity. The official guidelines also state that clubs should not demand medical or hormone evidence from players for Community Cricket participation.

For Anaya, that opens the first door.

She can play Premier Cricket competitions in Australian states and territories, as these are classified as Community Cricket under the current policy.

What Is Community Cricket and Elite Cricket in Australia?

This distinction is very important.

Community Cricket covers grassroots and other competitions that fall outside Cricket Australia’s Elite Cricket classification. In Anaya’s specific case, Cricket Australia has confirmed that Premier Cricket is considered Community Cricket.

Elite Cricket is different.

Competitions at the higher professional domestic level, including the WBBL and Sheffield Shield, come under a stricter eligibility policy for transgender players.

So, saying Anaya has already been given permission to play in the WBBL would not be correct.

She has been cleared for Community Cricket. For Elite Cricket, there is another process to complete.

Can Anaya Bangar Play in WBBL?

This is where things become very interesting for Anaya.

Yes, there is a possible pathway for her to become eligible for the Women’s Big Bash League, but she first needs to satisfy Cricket Australia’s Elite Cricket Policy.

Under Cricket Australia’s policy, a transgender woman seeking eligibility for elite women’s domestic cricket must demonstrate a serum testosterone concentration of less than 10 nanomoles per litre (nmol/L) continuously for at least 12 months.

In Anaya’s case, Cricket Australia has informed her that her eligibility for Elite Cricket would be from March 2027, subject to meeting the required conditions.

According to the letter reported by The Indian Express, she will need to provide a blood test after arriving in Australia confirming that her serum testosterone remains below 10 nmol/L and continue satisfying the policy requirements.

So, the situation is quite clear.

Anaya can play Community Cricket now.

For Elite Cricket and potentially the WBBL, she will have to fulfil the required criteria first.

If she becomes eligible and then performs well enough to earn a contract or selection, the WBBL could become a possibility.

There is still a big difference between being eligible for the WBBL and being selected by a WBBL team.

Anaya Bangar’s Cricket Journey Starts Again

This development becomes even more important when you look at Anaya’s cricketing background.

She is not someone who is trying cricket for the first time.

Anaya previously played age-group cricket in Mumbai and has shared the cricket field with players including Sarfaraz Khan. Reports also note her cricketing background alongside Sarfaraz and his younger brother Musheer Khan.

Cricket has therefore been a major part of her life.

After her transition and gender-affirming surgery, however, the question was whether she would have a pathway back into competitive cricket.

That pathway has now opened in Australia.

Anaya underwent gender-affirming surgery in Thailand in March 2026. She later spoke publicly about the process and thanked her father Sanjay Bangar and her family for supporting her during the journey.

Now the focus can gradually return to cricket.

What Has BCCI Said About Anaya Bangar?

This is where the situation in India remains unclear.

Anaya has also approached the BCCI seeking clarity about whether she can participate in women’s cricket in India.

According to The Indian Express, a senior BCCI official said the board currently does not have a policy covering a transgender woman playing women’s cricket. Anaya also said she had not received clarity from the BCCI after contacting the board.

Therefore, we cannot say at this stage that Anaya is eligible for the Women’s Premier League.

We also cannot say that the BCCI has officially rejected her.

The correct position is that there is currently no clear BCCI policy or decision publicly available that gives Anaya a route into women’s domestic cricket or the WPL.

Until that changes, her immediate cricketing opportunity lies in Australia.

Can Anaya Bangar Represent India or Australia Internationally?

Now comes perhaps the biggest question.

Could Anaya eventually represent India or Australia in women’s international cricket?

Under the current ICC regulations, the answer is no.

This is because international cricket operates under different rules from Cricket Australia’s domestic competitions.

In November 2023, the ICC introduced new gender eligibility regulations for international women’s cricket. Under those regulations, male-to-female transgender players who have experienced any part of male puberty beyond the ICC’s specified threshold are not eligible to participate in international women’s cricket.

Importantly, surgery or subsequent gender-affirming treatment does not change that eligibility position under the current ICC rules.

That means there is an important difference fans need to understand.

Australian domestic eligibility and international eligibility are not the same thing.

Cricket Australia maintains its own policy for domestic cricket. Therefore, a player could potentially satisfy Cricket Australia’s requirements for women’s domestic Elite Cricket but still remain ineligible to represent Australia internationally under ICC rules.

The same ICC regulations would apply if Anaya wanted to represent India in women’s international cricket.

So under the rules currently in place, international women’s cricket is not an available pathway for her.

Anaya Bangar Finally Has Clarity Over Her Cricketing Future

For months, there had been questions around whether Anaya Bangar would ever play competitive cricket again.

Now, at least one part of the picture is clear.

Cricket Australia has cleared Anaya Bangar to play women’s Community Cricket in Australia.

Her pathway towards Elite Cricket could open from March 2027 if she satisfies the required testosterone criteria. If she does that and performs well enough on the field, playing in competitions such as the WBBL could become possible.

In India, however, things remain unclear because the BCCI currently does not have a publicly established policy dealing with this situation.

And at international level, the ICC’s current regulations mean Anaya cannot represent either India or Australia in women’s international cricket if she falls within the male-puberty exclusion in those regulations.

So, there are still barriers.

But after wondering whether she would ever be able to play cricket again, Anaya now has something very important — a pathway back onto the cricket field.

From here, her performances will also have a major role to play.

Source link

Anaya Bangar is ready to return to competitive cricket.
