Joe Root\u2019s \u201crobust conversation\u201d with the England Test squad at Lord\u2019s this week has finally ended any uncertainty about the conduct expected of them. Josh Tongue has said the penny had \u201c100%\u201d dropped after the Test captain \u201cmade it clear what he expects from us\u201d after eight months of repeated infringements and frequent embarrassment.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a chat that was needed, a very good chat from Rooty,\u201d the 28-year-old said. \u201cHe was very clear on the message of what it\u2019s like to be an England cricketer. We\u2019re very privileged to put on that England shirt and we want to show kids growing up how good it is to play for England in front of thousands of people.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was honest with us all in the changing room. He said it straight. What has happened in the past is the past, and we need to try to move on from that.\u201d<\/p>\n Last November, Tongue, who was training with England\u2019s white-ball squad in New Zealand before the Ashes, was with Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell at a Wellington nightclub when Brook was punched by a bouncer<\/a>. The incident, on the night before a one-day international, led to Brook being fined and given a final warning over his conduct and Bethell being cautioned for breaching team rules. Tongue, who was not in the ODI squad, was not disciplined.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve just got to make sure we\u2019re as professional as we can be,\u201d he said. \u201cObviously things have happened, we need to try to move on and show all the youngsters growing up wanting to play for England that it\u2019s an amazing place to be. I\u2019ve just tried to move on from that [Wellington] situation and focus on the cricket.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s an absolute privilege to play for England and especially walking out and thousands of people watching you. I want to put in as many performances as I can for England, and win as many games for England as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
