Minutes later, after Palace earned a lifeline when Yeremy Pino\u2019s free-kick hit the post and rebounded into the net off goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma\u2019s back, Cherki extinguished Palace\u2019s revival by unleashing a fierce strike from the edge of the area that fizzed into the back of the net.<\/p>\n
But speaking after the match, Cherki was modest about his stunning brace \u2013 much to Haland\u2019s amusement.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Erling (Haaland) don\u2019t give the ball, I give, and then after it\u2019s my instinct, you know?\u201d Cherki said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I\u2019m very happy for the win today.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSay what you actually mean \u2013 you scored two top goals!\u201d Haaland interrupted.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was in charge of Wharton, he controlled him. He\u2019s helping us and is going to help in the future. We know he\u2019s a quality player.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think he was very, very good off the ball and was working very hard.\u201d <\/p>\n
Cherki insisted his impressive display was still far from his top level. <\/p>\n
His flamboyant antics on the pitch and volatile personality off it led to reports that Pep Guardiola was unconvinced by the former Lyon star last season.<\/p>\n
But with Guardiola having left at the end of last term, Cherki hopes to emerge as one of the figureheads of the new era under Mareca.<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably the first five or 10 minutes we saw how difficult it was. It\u2019s a difficult pitch and tough opponents,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter 10 minutes we controlled the game on the ball and off the ball and deserved to win. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe intensity on the team has been good.\u201d <\/p>\n
If City are to dethrone champions Arsenal this season, Maresca knows they will need Haaland at his predatory best.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know Erling. We know when we make chances it\u2019s good for him. We try to create chances for him as much as we can,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
