Last year I came second, I learned from my mistake, and I went back home and I worked on my mistake to perform and break the record today,\u201d said Gobena through an interpreter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Lesotho\u2019s Tebello Ramakongoana was third in 2:04:57. The top seven finishers, including Kiros, were all inside Kiros\u2019 record time of 2:06:06 set in last year\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">It was the Sydney Marathon\u2019s second year as a major, a list of elite events that includes New York, London, Berlin, Boston, Tokyo and Chicago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Jepchirchir broke the women\u2019s field early and raced away to win by more than three minutes as she claimed her fourth marathon major.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The Kenyan crossed the line in a time of 2:18:31, nine seconds behind Dutch multi-distance star Sifan Hassan\u2019s mark set in last year\u2019s event. The 28-year-old, who won bronze at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020, was never threatened as he bested the field early in the race and crossed the line in 1:26:50, more than 30 seconds better than the previous mark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure what to expect throughout \u2026 I decided to put in a test surge and see what response I got, and I just decided I made a little bit of space, I\u2019ll see if I can hold it, and I was able to hold it,\u201d Romanchuk said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Britain\u2019s David Weir was second at 1:31:33, with Luo Xingchuan of China two seconds further back in third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Switzerland\u2019s Manuela Sch\u00e4r won the women\u2019s event also in a record time of 1:42:04. Eden Rainbow-Cooper of Britain was second over five minutes behind Schar, with Tatyana McFadden of the United States in third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI haven\u2019t had the best start to the season.
