{"id":260378,"date":"2026-08-30T20:17:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-30T20:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/30\/really-unlucky-bizarre-law-loophole-sparks-utd-win-chelsea-survive-7-goal-thriller-pl-wrap\/"},"modified":"2026-08-30T20:17:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T20:17:00","slug":"really-unlucky-bizarre-law-loophole-sparks-utd-win-chelsea-survive-7-goal-thriller-pl-wrap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/30\/really-unlucky-bizarre-law-loophole-sparks-utd-win-chelsea-survive-7-goal-thriller-pl-wrap\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Really unlucky\u2019: Bizarre law loophole sparks Utd win, Chelsea survive 7-goal thriller \u2013 PL Wrap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Bruno Fernandes\u2019s hat-trick inspired a Manchester United fightback from a goal down to thrash Ipswich 5-2 and get their Premier League season up and running on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>After a nightmare 2-0 defeat to Hull last weekend, another newly-promoted side had the Red Devils on the ropes when Leif Davis opened the scoring for the Tractor Boys.<\/p>\n<p>But Fernandes blasted home to level before half time and then converted from the penalty spot after a Jacob Greaves own goal put United in front.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e5mrwj-0 jpgUYc\"><amp-iframe width=\"16\" height=\"9\" title=\"Minutely\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-popups allow-same-origin allow-top-navigation\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\" src=\"https:\/\/snippet.tldw.me\/amp\/amp-launcher.html?publisher=204500&amp;placement=4280\" class=\"i-amphtml-layout-responsive i-amphtml-layout-size-defined\" i-amphtml-layout=\"responsive\" id=\"i-amp-0\"><i-amphtml-sizer style=\"display:block;padding-top:56.25%\"\/><amp-img layout=\"fill\" src=\"https:\/\/content.foxsports.com.au\/fs\/electrode\/poster-fallback.png\" placeholder=\"true\" i-amphtml-ssr=\"\" data-hero=\"\" class=\"i-amphtml-layout-fill i-amphtml-layout-size-defined\" i-amphtml-layout=\"fill\"><\/amp-img><\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<p><b><i>Get all the latest football news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com.au\/newsletter-sign-up?utm_source=FootballArticle&amp;utm_medium=TextLink&amp;utm_campaign=signup\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sign up now!!!<\/a><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The United captain completed his hat-trick from close range before adding an assist to his fine afternoon for Bryan Mbeumo.<\/p>\n<p>However, the second-half comeback was sparked in controversial scenes, with an own goal caused by Harry Maguire\u2019s strike on the edge of the box upheld despite a clear handball.<\/p>\n<p>Ipswich players immediately protested after Maguire\u2019s shot ricocheted off Jacob Greaves and into the back of the net, with the United defender having bounced off his arm as he intercepted a clearance on the edge of the box.<\/p>\n<p>The VAR quickly found the handball, but bizarrely, were powerless to overturn the goal \u2013 because Maguire\u2019s shot wasn\u2019t initially on target.<\/p>\n<p>According to controversial handball laws, an accidental handball will only be enough to disallow a goal if the player involved is the immediate goalscorer.<\/p>\n<p>As Maguire\u2019s shot was deemed to be going wide before deflecting in off Greaves, the goal was cleared to stand.<\/p>\n<p>The official Premier League match centre account took to social media to explain the controversial ruling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an own goal and the accidental handball is not punishable, so we recommend you award the goal,\u201d VAR Jarred Gillett told referee Craig Pawson.<\/p>\n<p>Had Maguire\u2019s shot been initially on target, whether it had been touched by Greaves or not, the goal would not have stood.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the match, Maguire admitted the rule had worked in United\u2019s favour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt wasn\u2019t a handball on purpose, for sure, but I don\u2019t think it touched my fingers,\u201d he told Sky Sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually dragged the shot a bit wide, so I think it\u2019ll go down as an own goal, unfortunately. But that\u2019s probably the reason that it counted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it was my goal, they disallow it, which are the rules nowadays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut thankfully, it was on our side, and I think we deserved the win and that little bit of luck.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Harry Maguire's handball. (Source: Stan Sport)<\/span><span>Source: FOX SPORTS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ipswich manager Gary O\u2019Neil said his team were \u201creally unlucky\u201d with both United\u2019s first two goals, including the handball controversy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo beat Manchester United at Old Trafford you need the moments to go in your favour, and they didn\u2019t,\u201d he told Sky Sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRules can go against you, or a deflection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are lots of things that can happen in a game that are beyond your control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The controversy came after Marcus Rashford was handed his first United start in nearly two years as Michael Carrick made four changes to the side that kicked off the campaign with a woeful display eight days ago.<\/p>\n<p>Rashford and the return of his England international teammate Kobbie Mainoo made a big difference, but United were again reliant on Fernandes as a difference-maker in the final third.<\/p>\n<p>Questions also remain over Carrick\u2019s men at the back.<\/p>\n<p>Senne Lammens had to save one-on-one from Julio Enciso after he broke clear from a United corner before Ipswich took the lead on 29 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Abdul Fatawu burned Luke Shaw for pace down the wing and his cross was brilliantly swept high into the net by Davis.<\/p>\n<p>Moments later, the Ipswich left-back had an even better chance to double the visitors\u2019 lead, but his tame effort was saved by Lammens.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the game swung on an Ipswich error as Marcelino Nunez slipped to gift possession to Matheus Cunha, who fed Fernandes to blast home on his weaker left foot.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick in Manchester United\u2019s win over Ipswich Town. (AP Photo\/Dave Thompson)<\/span><span>Source: AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Following the handball controversy which saw United take the lead, Greaves was still clearing his head when he chopped down Cunha as he bore down on goal.<\/p>\n<p>Fernandes, who was this week crowned last season\u2019s player of the year by his fellow professionals, coolly converted the resulting spot-kick.<\/p>\n<p>It was a record 21 Premier League assists last season that powered Fernandes to a haul of individual awards as he only scored nine times.<\/p>\n<p>The Portuguese international is already a third of the way to matching that tally as he was in the right place to latch onto Mbeumo\u2019s deflected shot and complete his hat-trick.<\/p>\n<p>And there was still time for Fernandes to add an assist when Mbeumo raced on to his pass over the top and looped the ball over giant Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.<\/p>\n<p>But a fine display going forward was book-ended by United errors at the back as Ipswich were gifted a consolation in stoppage time.<\/p>\n<p>Lisandro Martinez was caught in possession by Enciso, who teed up Chuba Akpom to tap into an empty net.<\/p>\n<p><b>\ufeff\u2018HARD-FOUGHT\u2019: ALONSO\u2019S ADMISSION AS CHELSEA SURVIVE SEVEN-GOAL THRILLER<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Xabi Alonso said Chelsea are still a work in progress after a thrilling 4-3 win against Brighton on Sunday extended his perfect start as Blues boss.<\/p>\n<p>Alonso has presided over two successive wins in the Premier League and one in the League Cup since taking charge of the Blues.<\/p>\n<p>Alonso insisted that Chelsea\u2019s fine form does not mean he has solved all the problems that caused them to finish 10th prior to his arrival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHard-fought win but this is the Premier League. We knew that Brighton were tough to beat recently in these games. There was history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was good to finish with the win but many things happened. We will have time to analyse different stages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a brilliant first half hour. We could have scored more than three. But we were sitting too deep after that. But this is a process. (Photo by Adrian Dennis \/ AFP)<\/span><span>Source: AFP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Romeo Lavia opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge with his first Chelsea goal since signing from Southampton in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Pedro Neto doubled the Blues\u2019 lead and Joao Pedro added the third before Brighton\u2019s Malick Yalcouye got one back late on in a frenzied first half.<\/p>\n<p>Pedro\u2019s own goal after the interval gave Chelsea a few anxious moments before Cole Palmer struck in the closing stages.<\/p>\n<p>Pascal Gross netted in stoppage-time but it was too late to derail Chelsea. <\/p>\n<p>Alonso has already breathed new life into Chelsea\u2019s attack, with nine goals in their first three games, but questions remain about a creaky defence that has been breached five times.<\/p>\n<p>Pedro, Palmer, Neto and Morgan Rogers have linked superbly in attack in Alonso\u2019s first three games.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting former Brighton striker Pedro\u2019s contribution, Alonso said: \u201cHe has been terrific in all the games he has played this season and also the pre-season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has the desire to play each game 100 per cent and have a terrific season. We saw that even today. Even if we conceded three goals, he had a straight impact and he helped the team really well. We are happy we have him,\u201d Alonso said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is a great personality and a great goalkeeper. His expression and his charisma influence the rest of the team.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez was absent for the second successive game after links with Manchester City.<\/p>\n<p>Alonso would not be drawn on Fernandez\u2019s future, or the potential for more signings before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will see what happens. We are ready for whatever.
