The Monarchs nearly weathered the Captains&#8217; offensive pressure, but an Olimpico goal in the 73rd minute proved to be the difference as CNU earned a 1\u20130 victory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JUST THE FACTS<\/strong><br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>Final score:\u00a0<\/strong>Christopher Newport def. Methodist, 1\u00ad\u20130<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>Records:<\/strong>\u00a0Methodist 0-1-0, Christoper Newport 1-0-0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>Location:<\/strong>\u00a0Captains Field; Newport News, Virginia<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>HOW IT HAPPENED<\/strong>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;\n<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Christopher Newport controlled the tempo for much of the opening half, outshooting Methodist 13\u20130.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>The Monarchs started freshman <dfn><a href=\"https:\/\/mumonarchs.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/kiera-ferguson\/15024\" rel=\"smarttag noopener\" rev=\"15024\" target=\"_blank\">Kiera Ferguson<\/a><\/dfn> in goal, and she tallied five saves through the opening 45 minutes to keep the game scoreless.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>The Captains continued to apply pressure early in the second half, but Ferguson remained strong in net, stopping all three shots on goal during the opening 11 minutes.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>After being held scoreless on its previous attempts, Christopher Newport finally broke through in the 73rd minute. The Captains were awarded a corner kick, and Catie Borsuk answered with a direct, curling shot that found the back of the net.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Methodist nearly responded moments later with its two best offensive opportunities of the night. First, freshman <dfn><a href=\"https:\/\/mumonarchs.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/ryley-brinkley\/15022\" rel=\"smarttag noopener\" rev=\"15022\" target=\"_blank\">Ryley Brinkley<\/a><\/dfn> lined up a free kick from approximately 25 yards out and sent a shot directly on target, but the CNU goalkeeper punched it away.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>The Monarchs then earned a corner kick that senior <dfn><a href=\"https:\/\/mumonarchs.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/emily-hoyt\/15006\" rel=\"smarttag noopener\" rev=\"15006\" target=\"_blank\">Emily Hoyt<\/a><\/dfn> delivered into the box. Her service found an open <dfn><a href=\"https:\/\/mumonarchs.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/sydney-campbell\/15023\" rel=\"smarttag noopener\" rev=\"15023\" target=\"_blank\">Sydney Campbell<\/a><\/dfn>, who headed the ball just over the crossbar.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Methodist had one final opportunity in the 79th minute after earning another corner kick, but the Monarchs were unable to connect with a teammate in the box.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NUMBERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Ferguson made a game-high 10 saves in her collegiate debut.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Both of Methodist&#8217;s shots were recorded by rookies, with seven Monarchs making their collegiate debuts.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>The Captains held a significant advantage in shots, 29\u20132, including an 11\u20131 edge in shots on goal.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UP NEXT<\/strong><br \/>\nMethodist returns to Fayetteville for its home opener against Shaw University on Sunday, Sept. 6.
