The NFL has spent years trying to make football safer without making football feel less like football.<\/p>\n

That is a difficult line to walk when the product itself is built around controlled violence.<\/p>\n

The league’s latest attempt puts even more responsibility on the players. Under a new system agreed upon by the NFL and NFL Players association<\/a>, players who commit three violations across five emphasized health and safety categories in a season will receive a one-game suspension. The categories include hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players and blindside blocks. The violations can also carry into future seasons.<\/p>\n

There is nothing unreasonable about asking players not to deliberately put one another in danger. Players know their bodies better than anyone, an professional football requires an enormous amount of discipline. if a defender repeatedly uses a technique that puts opponents at an unnecessary risk, there should be consequences.<\/p>\n

Accountability is just part of the solution<\/h2>\n

But there is a difference between holding players accountable for dangerous decisions and making players responsible for solving football’s fundamental violence problem.<\/p>\n

That distinction matters.<\/p>\n

The NFL has been changing its rules for years in an effort to eliminate dangerous techniques. The league says it has made more than 50 health and safety related rule changes since 2002, while also acknowledging that it has to preserve the intense action with physical contact that make football appealing in the first place.<\/p>\n

That creates an awkward responsibility gap.<\/p>\n

Players are told to hit safely. Coaches are expected to teach safer techniques. Officials are expected to identify increasingly specific forms of illegal contact. The league reviews plays after the fact and fines or suspends players who cross the line.<\/p>\n

But the line keeps moving.<\/p>\n

A tackle that was perfectly ordinary for one generation of players can become a penalty for the next. the hip-drop tackle was an obvious example. The NFL banned the technique ahead of the 2024 season<\/a> after determining it carried a substantially higher injury risk, despite resistance from the NFLPA and players who argued the technique could be difficult to distinguish in real time.<\/p>\n

Now the league has gone a step further by creating a system that essentially asks players to keep track of their own risk profile.<\/p>\n

That is useful accountability. It is not a complete solution.<\/p>\n

The NFL’s new system actually recognizes this to some extent. Coaches must participate in league meetings when players approach the suspension threshold. while clubs the excessive health and safety violations can face additional financial penalties. That is important because player safety cannot be reduced to the person who happens to deliver the hit.<\/p>\n

The responsibility should be shared.<\/p>\n

Players have to adjust. Coaches have to teach, Officials have to enforce. The league has to make rules that are understandable and consistently applied.<\/p>\n

And the NFL has to acknowledge the uncomfortable truth at the center of all of this: you cannot completely separate football from violence and still have the football the league has spent generations selling.<\/p>\n

The goal should not be to pretend otherwise.<\/p>\n

It should be to decide exactly which violence is necessary to the sport, which violence is reckless, and who is responsible when the distinction inevitably gets blurry.<\/p>\n

Players should police their own actions. But they should not be expected to police the entire contradiction that is professional football.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
