Ask yourself when was the last time you donated blood. If you meet the conditions to donate, there is no excuse not to contribute to one of the greatest acts of solidarity. There\u2019s no need to wait for someone close to us to be in need.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that sometimes athletes hesitate to donate because they wonder how a donation might affect their athletic performance. Let\u2019s be honest: the short answer is yes, although the impact depends on several factors: the type of donation, the intensity of training, the sport we practice, and, above all, the timing in the season when we decide to donate.<\/p>\n<h6>Less blood, less capacity to transport oxygen<\/h6>\n<p>For an athlete, the main impact of donating blood is not so much the drop in blood volume as the temporary reduction in red blood cells and in hemoglobin, the protein responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the muscles.<\/p>\n<p>The plasma, which accounts for a large portion of blood volume, recovers relatively quickly. However, the production of new red blood cells takes longer. Therefore, even though we may feel normal a few days after donating, our maximum capacity to transport oxygen can remain below normal levels.<\/p>\n<p>And this is especially relevant in endurance sports. Studies conducted with athletes and trained individuals have observed declines in VO\u2082max and in maximal exercise capacity after a whole blood donation. In a controlled study with moderately trained people, VO\u2082max fell by as much as 10%, and hemoglobin mass by about 7% over a four-week follow-up period.<\/p>\n<p>Another study noted that, three days after donation, VO\u2082max had decreased by 6.5% and time-trial performance by 5.2%. In that work, performance had returned to baseline values roughly around day 14, although some blood parameters, such as hemoglobin, took longer to recover.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean every athlete will lose 5% or 10% of performance. The results come from specific groups, and individual responses can vary widely. But they do give us an important idea: <strong>donating blood can have a measurable effect on performance, especially when we need our peak aerobic capacity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h6>When is it most noticeable?<\/h6>\n<p>The early days are the most delicate. A review of several studies found reductions in hemoglobin, VO\u2082max, and maximal exercise capacity during the first 24\u201348 hours after a conventional donation. Therefore, the day of donation is not a good time to train hard, and it would be wise to avoid scheduling interval workouts, high-intensity sessions, long runs, competitions, or particularly demanding workouts immediately afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, there is another factor often overlooked: donation can temporarily affect cardiovascular response and thermoregulation. In a study with cyclists exercising in hot conditions, changes in heart rate and temperature regulation were observed after donation. These acute effects disappeared after roughly two days.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4>The practical recommendation is simple: <strong>treat the donation day as a rest day and resume exercise gradually<\/strong>, especially if dizziness, weakness, or fatigue appear.<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h6>So, when is the best time to donate?<\/h6>\n<p>If you train for health or recreationally, you probably don\u2019t need to overcomplicate the schedule. But if you have specific athletic objectives, planning it is worth it. The worst option is to donate in the weeks leading up to a major competition, especially if we\u2019re talking about a endurance test where small changes in performance can make a big difference.<\/p>\n<p>Marathon, half marathon, road cycling, triathlon, trail running, cross-country skiing, or long-distance events are disciplines where the ability to transport oxygen becomes particularly important. In these cases, it makes sense to avoid donation close to the main seasonal target.<\/p>\n<p>A reasonable strategy is to schedule donation during a period of lower training load, for example after a major competition or during a transition or recovery phase, and then leave enough window before the next target.<\/p>\n<p>There isn\u2019t, however, a universal magic number of days. Some studies have found performance recovery around two weeks, while others have observed hematological changes for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does the effect of donation change with the sport we practice?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes. And a lot. In endurance sports, such as running, cycling, triathlon, rowing, or long-distance swimming, the temporary reduction in oxygen transport capacity can have a larger impact.<\/p>\n<p>In sports that are predominantly technical or strength-based, the effect on sport-specific performance can be smaller, though that doesn\u2019t mean that donating blood is irrelevant. Fatigue, lower tolerance for intense exercise, and the pace of recovery of blood volume can also influence outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>In a strength workout, for instance, the drop in VO\u2082max may not be the decisive factor for performance, while in a long uphill cycling effort it can be much more critical.<\/p>\n<p>You also have to pay attention to iron. Donating blood entails iron loss, and ferritin reserves can drop significantly. Athletes who already start with low reserves may find frequent donations become an additional factor to monitor. In the study of repeated donations, ferritin fell by about 50% after a donation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does donating blood mean you have to stop training?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No. It means training with caution. Donating blood and sport are not incompatible. In fact, an active person can be a donor if they meet the established criteria. The key is choosing the right moment and respecting the subsequent recovery.<\/p>\n<p>For a recreational athlete, the strategy can be as simple as donating on a day off, resting afterward, and gradually returning to training. For someone preparing for a competition, the most sensible approach is to avoid donation during the critical weeks of preparation or on days immediately before the competition.<\/p>\n<p>There is also an important difference between whole blood donation and plasma donation. In plasma donation, most red blood cells are returned to the donor, so the impact on hemoglobin is different. Precisely for this reason, some studies have pointed to plasma donation as a potentially more compatible option with athletes\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The first 72 hours after donating blood, step by step<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The first hours:<\/strong><br \/>After donation, the priority is to rehydrate and avoid exertion. Drink normally and follow the donation center\u2019s instructions. That day, better to avoid intense training, demanding lifts, or activities that require substantial physical effort. If you feel dizzy, weak, or unwell, rest and don\u2019t train.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At 24 hours:<\/strong><br \/>If you feel well, you can resume light activity, such as walking, gentle mobility work, or a very easy bike ride. The intensity should be clearly lower than usual. It\u2019s not the time to check how much you\u2019ve lost physically\u2014the goal is to facilitate recovery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At 48 hours:<\/strong><br \/>If there are no symptoms and recovery is normal, you can gradually increase activity. A light jog or a moderate training session can be reasonable for many athletes, but still avoid maximal efforts, very intense intervals, and especially long sessions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At 72 hours:<\/strong><br \/>For many recreational athletes who feel perfectly fine, this can be a good moment to slowly return to their usual routine.
