data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/michael-matthews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Matthews<\/a> (Jayco AlUla) is always a favourite for the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/grand-prix-cycliste-de-quebec\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/grand-prix-cycliste-de-quebec\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/grand-prix-cycliste-de-quebec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grand Prix Cycliste de Qu\u00e9bec<\/a>, but this year the race will hold extra importance for the Australian.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not just because the two Canadian Grands Prix this year are acting as a rehearsal for the upcoming <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/uci-road-world-championships\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/uci-road-world-championships\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/uci-road-world-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Road World Championships<\/a> in Montr\u00e9al later this month \u2013 though that&#8217;s of course a part of it \u2013 but also because for Matthews every race at full fitness this career short last year, he came back to a good level at the start of 2026 only to suffer <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/tour-de-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tour de France<\/a>, but this week in Canada will mark only his third and fourth one-day races post-accident.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;I&#8217;m feeling good. After the Tour I had a good block of training again at altitude. Obviously that was a massive setback, because everything was going really smoothly after my health problems the year before. I was able to turn things around and get back into good shape after the <em>embolia<\/em> in my lungs and then breaking both my arms and breaking my face was obviously a massive setback.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;But I&#8217;m also happy to be alive. Last year the breakaway managed to stay away, but I was still sprinting \u2013 if the break wasn&#8217;t away, I was still sprinting for the win from the bunch, so it was OK. But now with the new finish, we don&#8217;t know,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;It&#8217;s always different every year. I probably spend more time in Canada than I do in Australia these days, so I somewhat feel like it&#8217;s almost my home race now,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;Also I&#8217;ve had a lot of success here, so the fans obviously get behind me a lot, even when we&#8217;re out training. Today and every day we&#8217;re here, whether it&#8217;s a car driving past or fans riding on the road, they know who we are, which is quite special I think. And these two races have brought cycling in Canada to a new level, which is really nice to be a part of.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-3c6f64c6-ac9d-11f1-b9e7-d196cf0c7053\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"facing-big-rivals-although-not-pogacar-3\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Facing big rivals, although not Poga\u010dar<\/h2>\n<p id=\"elk-3c6f6548-ac9d-11f1-8dac-e9fdd3dc303b\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Taking win number four certainly won&#8217;t be straightforward, though, particularly with the Worlds in Montr\u00e9al meaning he&#8217;s up against an even stronger field than normal, with potentially a smaller portion of sprinters and more climbing stars like Paul Seixas, Isaac del Toro and Remco Evenepoel.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Matthews did get a sneak peak of the latter when they were both preparing for this final block of racing.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;We were in training camp at the same place in Livigno in Italy leading up to this, and I saw he was in really good shape, doing some really good training sessions,&#8221; he said of Evenepoel.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;I know his focus is probably for the Worlds in a few weeks in Montr\u00e9al, but I&#8217;m sure whenever he races he&#8217;s going to try and win. He&#8217;s a racer, whenever he puts his number on he&#8217;s going for it. But Qu\u00e9bec normally comes down to a sprint, but I think when you look at the start list this year, I&#8217;d say there&#8217;s less sprinters and more climbers let&#8217;s say. I think it&#8217;s going to be a very selective race on Friday, I&#8217;d say.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The question on everyone&#8217;s lips this week in Canada is about how <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/tadej-pogacar\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/tadej-pogacar\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/tadej-pogacar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tadej Poga\u010dar<\/a>&#8216;s absence from the rest of the season might affect the races still to come. For Matthews, though, the Slovenian&#8217;s nasty crash at the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a was first and foremost a personal shock, rather than a racing headline. The pair are neighbours and close friends.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;I was watching the race from the massage table when I was doing Plouay, on the Saturday, so it was honestly very difficult to watch, especially when it&#8217;s such a good mate. It does open the race up a lot more to a different style of racing. I think normally you would see probably a very hard race, and then a very open race from 80 to 100ks to go, whereas now I think people will probably wait a bit longer for the last few laps to start maybe a more traditional bike race for this year at the Worlds.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Whether that&#8217;s a race Matthews can be involved with is a bigger question, and it may well end up too difficult for his capabilities, but first he has a return to the GP de Qu\u00e9bec to look forward to, a race he knows how to win better than anyone.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"><strong>For unbeatable coverage across road, gravel and tech, subscribe to Cyclingnews.
