that surviving Saturday&#8217;s mammoth <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/vuelta-a-espana-2026-stage-20-preview\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/vuelta-a-espana-2026-stage-20-preview\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" rel=\"noopener\">stage 20<\/a> through the Sierra Nevada is key to overall success.<\/p>\n<p>The Alto de Pe\u00f1as Blancas summit climb on Friday saw Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe and Decathlon CMA CGM lay down a steady pace for their respective leaders and the closest rivals to Mas overall, Primo\u017e Rogli\u010d and Felix Gall, while EF Education-EasyPost&#8217;s Juan Felipe Rodr\u00edguez Contreras also put in a lengthy spell on the front for Richard Carapaz.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"ecom-root\"\/>\n<p id=\"elk-aaa1778e-ae02-11f1-8b27-4307d3cd2278-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">But beyond one testing acceleration by Rogli\u010d close to the summit, to which Mas responded easily, and Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) dropping back yet again and sliding to ninth in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/vuelta-a-espana-gc-standings-from-yellow-to-red-tadej-pogacar-takes-leaders-jersey-on-opening-day\/\" on Saturday&#8217;s brutally difficult four category 1 and hors categorie ascents, and once again Mas will be at the centre of any last-minute assault on the overall.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Both Rogli\u010d and Carapaz are clearly looking restless in terrain they know very well &#8211; and over climbs where Carapaz launched a long-distance attack to gain two minutes in demeanour after the stage did not suggest that he was in any way stressing about it.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;One more day of concentration and that&#8217;s it,&#8221; Mas told reporters afterwards. &#8220;Today was a complicated stage, long and with a lot of climbing, but I felt good. Sepp and Richie really wanted to go for it, maybe more for the stage, but they are a bit close in the GC, so we had to control them.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;But I think you saw my team handling it, they did a super good job again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The high mountains of Granada arguably represent a much bigger challenge for Mas and his team than the sierras of Malaga, but for now the 31-year-old is a day closer to the biggest win of his career and has yet to show any signs of weakness.
