Zimbabwe veteran Brendan Taylor<\/strong><\/a> added another remarkable chapter to his international career on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter surpassed Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar\u2019s record for the longest career in men\u2019s ODI cricket<\/strong> after being named in Zimbabwe\u2019s playing XI for the first ODI against Australia in Harare.<\/p>\n Taylor\u2019s return to the international stage has already been a notable story, but his appearance against Australia made it historic. His ODI career has now stretched to 22 years and 148 days, moving beyond Tendulkar\u2019s previous record of 22 years and 91 days.<\/p>\n Taylor made his ODI debut for Zimbabwe against Sri Lanka in April 2004. Taylor, however, achieved the feat despite his own international journey taking several unexpected turns.<\/p>\n One of the most interesting aspects of Taylor\u2019s achievement is the difference in the number of matches played by the two cricketers.<\/p>\n Taylor entered the Australia series having featured in 207 ODIs, while Tendulkar remains the most-capped player in men\u2019s ODI history with 463 appearances.<\/p>\n Taylor has accumulated 6,708 ODI runs, including 11 centuries, with an unbeaten 145 as his highest score. While his numbers do not match Tendulkar\u2019s extraordinary statistical output, his longevity has now given him a unique place in ODI history.<\/p>\n Taylor\u2019s career has also included lengthy interruptions. He initially retired from international cricket in 2021 and later served a three-and-a-half-year suspension after being sanctioned for breaches of the ICC\u2019s Anti-Corruption and Anti-Doping Codes. He subsequently returned to Zimbabwe cricket, eventually making his way back into the international setup.<\/p>\n Taylor\u2019s achievement does not mean that Tendulkar\u2019s dominance of the ODI record books has disappeared. The former India opener still owns several of the format\u2019s most significant records.<\/p>\n Tendulkar remains the leading run-scorer in men\u2019s ODI cricket with 18,426 runs. He also holds the record for the most ODI appearances, having played 463 matches during his international career.<\/p>\n Therefore, Taylor\u2019s latest milestone is specifically about career longevity. He was brought back after spending a year away from the format and was also expected to take on wicketkeeping responsibilities following Clive Madande\u2019s injury.<\/p>\n The historic occasion did not result in a major batting contribution, as Taylor was dismissed for four runs off 13 balls while Zimbabwe chased Australia\u2019s target of 295. He did, however, contribute behind the stumps, taking a diving catch to dismiss Josh Inglis.<\/p>\n Australia went on to win the opening ODI by 59 runs.
