The United States has one of the deepest women\u2019s soccer talent pools in the world, and college soccer continues to play an important role in developing players who could eventually become part of the USWNT. While more young Americans are now turning professional earlier, the NCAA remains home<\/a> to many players already gaining experience with the country\u2019s youth national teams.<\/p>\n That pathway is particularly visible in 2026. The U.S. Under-20 Women\u2019s National Team is preparing for the FIFA U-20 Women\u2019s World Cup in Poland with a roster featuring 13 college players, while the U-23 team has also continued to bring collegiate players into its camps. U.S. Soccer has explicitly described the U-20 program as a bridge toward the senior national team, with 23 players from the last three U-20 World Cup Rosters eventually going on to compete for the USWNT.<\/p>\n Several current college players stand out because of their international experience, performances at the NCAA level, and involvement in the U.S. pathway. They may not all be senior internationals yet, but they are among the players who could eventually be competing for places on the USWNT.<\/p>\n Stanford goalkeeper Caroline Birkel<\/a> is one of the clearest examples of a college player already progressing through the national-team pathway.<\/p>\n Birkel was part of the U.S. team that won bronze at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women\u2019s World Cup and has continued to be a regular presence with the U-20 program. She was selected for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women\u2019s World Cup roster<\/a> and has six U-20 caps listed by U.S. Soccer.<\/p>\n Her international resume is matched by her college performances. Birkel won ACC Goalkeeper of the Year as a freshman in 2025 after helping Stanford win the ACC regular-season and tournament titles and reach the College Cup.<\/p>\n She has also been exposed to a broader national-team environment. Birkel was one of the college players invited to U.S. Soccer\u2019s January 2026 National Team Development Camp, which was held concurrently with the senior USWNT\u2019s training camp in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n That experience is particularly valuable for a goalkeeper. The position generally requires patience and development. Birkel already has experience playing international matches, competing for one of the country\u2019s strongest college programs, and training within the U.S. national team structure.<\/p>\n Florida State midfielder Nyanya Touray is another player whose trajectory deserves attention.<\/p>\n Touray helped Florida State win the 2025 NCAA championship and was part of the National Team Development Camp in January. She was also one of the youngest players in the January Development Camp, having been born in 2008.<\/p>\n Touray\u2019s youth international experience is especially impressive considering her age. She played at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women\u2019s World Cup and scored four goals during the tournament. This includes goals in all three of the United States\u2019 group stage matches.<\/p>\n She now has the opportunity to continue developing at Florida State while competing against some of the best college teams in the country. Her combination of youth international experience and NCAA success makes her one of the players who could eventually move toward the senior national team.<\/p>\n Stanford midfielder Y-Lan Nguyen is another player who has consistently appeared in the U.S. youth setup.<\/p>\n Nguyen is on the 2026 U-20 World Cup roster and has five U-20 caps<\/a>. She was also included in the January National Team Development Camp alongside Stanford teammates Birkel and Charlotte Kohler.<\/p>\n Her international resume goes beyond the current U-20 cycle. Nguyen was part of the United States team at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women\u2019s World Cup, giving her experience on a major international stage before moving into the U-20 setup.<\/p>\n Nguyen has also benefited from playing at Stanford, where the level of competition is consistently high. Having teammates such as Birkel and other national team prospects around her provides another environment in which she can continue developing.<\/p>\n Her versatility in midfield and familiarity with the U.S. youth system make her an intriguing prospect as the federation looks for players who can eventually transition into the senior setup.<\/p>\n University of Washington forward Alex Buck has also become an important part of the U.S. U-20 picture.<\/p>\n Buck is included<\/a> on the 2026 U-20 World Cup roster and has six U-20 appearances with one goal. She was also part of the January Development Camp, giving her experience in a setting that brought college prospects together while the senior USWNT was training nearby.<\/p>\n Her inclusion in the U-20 World Cup squad represents another significant opportunity. The tournament is one of the most important stages in the youth pathway because U.S. soccer has repeatedly used it to identify players capable of progressing toward the senior national team.<\/p>\n Buck\u2019s role at Washington also gives her the chance to continue developing in a competitive NCAA environment<\/a>. If she can combine consistent college production with her international experience, she could become another forward for the senior team staff to monitor.<\/p>\n North Carolina defender Aven Alvarez enters the U-20 World Cup as one of the most experienced collegiate players in the U.S. squad.<\/p>\n U.S. Soccer lists Alvarez with 12 U-20 caps, the highest total among the college players on the 2026 World Cup roster. She is one of only two players on the roster with more than 10 U-20 appearances.<\/p>\n That experience makes Alvarez an important part of the U.S. defense. She has already spent multiple years moving through the youth national team system. This gives her an understanding of the demands of international soccer that many college players have yet to experience.<\/p>\n Alvarez has also been part of a strong North Carolina program. The Tar Heels are regularly among the teams expected to compete for major NCAA honors, meaning she is developing against high-level college opposition while simultaneously gaining international experience.<\/p>\n Her combination of youth national team experience and a demanding college environment gives her a strong foundation for a potential move toward the professional and senior international levels.<\/p>\n Virginia defender Pearl Cecil is another young player with an unusually extensive international resume.<\/p>\n Cecil was part of the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women\u2019s World Cup team and later joined the U-20 pathway. She was selected for the January 2026 National Team Development Camp and is also on the U.S. U-20 World Cup roster.<\/p>\n U.S. Soccer has described Cecil as a player who has already experienced several levels of the youth national team system. She was also part of the U.S. U-19 team that won bronze at the 2023 Pan American Games, a tournament in which the United States faced senior national teams from countries including Bolivia, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Chile.<\/p>\n That experience is important because it exposes Cecil to older and more physically developed opponents. Combined with her time at Virginia, it gives her an unusual amount of international experience for a current college player.<\/p>\n Notre Dame midfielder Lily Joseph is another current collegiate player who has earned a place in the U.S. U-20 setup.<\/p>\n Joseph was included on the 2026 U-20 World Cup roster after appearing in the team\u2019s preparation camps earlier in the year. U.S. Soccer lists her with two U-20 caps.<\/p>\n Her development at Notre Dame allows her to compete in the ACC while continuing to gain international experience. The conference includes several programs represented on the U.S. youth national teams. This means that Joseph regularly faces players who are also being evaluated by national team scouts.<\/p>\n This is why her presence on the World Cup roster is an important step. A strong tournament could give her another opportunity to demonstrate that she belongs among the players being considered for the next level.<\/p>\n Wake Forest forward Kylie Maxwell provides another attacking option to watch.<\/p>\n Maxwell was included in the U.S. U-20 camp that prepared for the 2026 World Cup and was listed on the team\u2019s June roster. U.S. Soccer\u2019s June camp featured 18 college players, demonstrating the depth of NCAA talent being evaluated by the federation.<\/p>\n Maxwell also enters the season with significant college recognition. She won ACC Freshman of the Year in 2025 after making an immediate impact for Wake Forest.<\/p>\n Her development is worth following because forwards often have to make the biggest statistical impact at the college level to force their way into the senior team conversation. Continued production for Wake Forest, combined with further U.S. youth team experience, could strengthen Maxwell\u2019s case.<\/p>\n Wake Forest defender Sierra Sythe is another current college player who has already reached the U-23 level.<\/p>\n Sythe was selected for the first U.S. U-23 Women\u2019s National Team camp of 2026. That roster contained 21 professionals and only three current college players, making her inclusion particularly notable.<\/p>\n The U-23 program is especially important because U.S. Soccer has directly connected it to the senior team. The federation reported that 14 players who appeared for the U-23 team in 2025 eventually received full USWNT call-ups, including players called into the January 2026 senior camp.<\/p>\n Sythe therefore has an opportunity to develop in a pathway that has recently produced senior internationals. Her ability to compete at the U-23 level while still playing college soccer makes her one of the more interesting defensive prospects in the NCAA.<\/p>\n Colorado forward Hope Leyba is yet another player whose U-23 experience has put her on the national radar.<\/p>\n Leyba was selected for the 2026 U-23 camp after an extraordinary 2025 college season in which she scored 22 goals and added one assist in 24 matches for Colorado. U.S. Soccer specifically highlighted her numbers<\/a> when announcing the U-23 roster.<\/p>\n That scoring record made Leyba one of the most productive attacking players in college soccer, and the U-23 call-up allowed her to test herself against older professional players.<\/p>\n Her inclusion is particularly interesting because of the small number of college players included in the U-23 roster. The fact that Leyba was selected despite the vast majority of the squad being professional players demonstrates how highly her college performances were regarded.<\/p>\n The players currently moving through the U-20 and the U-23 programs are not guaranteed future senior team careers. However, the pathway is becoming increasingly clear.<\/p>\n U.S. Soccer says the U-20 World Cup has been a major stepping stone toward the senior national team. Across the last three U-20 World Cups, 23 U.S. players subsequently went on to compete for the USWNT.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re very fortunate that we have a manager of the Women\u2019s National Team that is very much invested in our youth talent pathway. Every camp I do, I have a list of players that Emma wants to see, and we do high potential reports on those players that are given to the Women\u2019s National Team staff, so they\u2019re very much aware of the players in this group,\u201d said U.S. Under-20 Women\u2019s Youth National Team head coach Vicky Jepson<\/a>.<\/p>\n The U-23 program has produced an even more immediate connection. Fourteen players who appeared for the U-23 team in 2025 eventually received senior USWNT call-ups, according to U.S. Soccer.<\/p>\n That makes the current group of college players particularly interesting. All these players are currently developing through different stages of the system. Their paths ultimately lead toward the same goal. That is playing for the USWNT.<\/p>\n The next generation of USWNT players is already taking shape across college soccer. These players, and even more, already have experience in the youth system.
