Greg Schiano did great things at Rutgers<\/a> in the late 2000s and early 2010s, putting the football program back on the map and turning it into a consistent Bowl team. When the school brought him back in 2020, it was done so with the hope that he could rework some of that magic.<\/p>\n Now seven years into that reunion, it is pretty clear that is not going to happen, and his seat has to be getting warm.<\/p>\n Along with that, another prominent, big-name coach (former LSU<\/a> and Notre Dame<\/a> head coach Brian Kelly) is starting to get mentioned in connection with the job.<\/p>\n In writing about the Rutgers job on Saturday morning at The Athletic, Bruce Feldman made the connection<\/a> between Kelly and Rutgers, pointing out that he is very motivated to get back on the sidelines.<\/p>\n Rutgers president Bill Tate and athletic director Keli Zinn came to New Jersey after working at LSU, where Kelly had been the Tigers coach. Kelly, who won more games at Notre Dame than any other coach, did fizzle out in Baton Rouge, but the Rutgers job would be a much different dynamic, and Kelly is very comfortable in the Northeast.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Kelly’s LSU tenure ended in failure and disappointment, but he has built winners at Central Michigan<\/a>, Cincinnati<\/a> and Notre Dame. And while LSU is one of the biggest pressure-cooker jobs in the country, with expectations that are always through the roof, Rutgers would be an entirely different ballgame, and one where it would not take much to earn the respect of the fan base.\u00a0<\/p>\n It would also get him back into a major conference in the Big Ten.\u00a0<\/p>\n But is it the type of Big Ten program where he could see himself seriously competing and winning? And would the resources be there for him to build a team that could compete with the top powers in the conference? Those would be the big questions that would need to be answered.\u00a0<\/p>\n Since returning to Rutgers, Schiano has never won more than seven games in a single season and has finished with a losing record in four of his six full seasons.<\/p>\n With Saturday’s loss to USC<\/a>, they are 0-3 in 2026, including a horrific 37-21 loss to UMass at home to open the season.
