Aston Villa<\/a> went into the summer as Europa League winners, but keeping that squad together was never going to be simple.<\/p>\n

Unai Emery was forced into a major rebuild during the window, with around half of the side that lifted the trophy leaving Villa Park.<\/p>\n

With that much turnover, a slow start was always likely, and so it proved. Villa had to wait until their fifth Premier League game for a first win of the season, but when it came, it came in style.<\/p>\n

Emery’s side went to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and raced into a 3-0 lead through Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buend\u00eda. Spurs pulled two goals back late on to make the final few minutes nervy, but the 3-2 scoreline flattered the hosts.<\/p>\n

Speaking to VillaTV after the game, Emery was delighted with how his players carried out the gameplan.<\/p>\n

“We are delighted (with) how the players responded on the field (with) the gameplan we planned, how we were needing (to) get points and in this stadium, in this scenario, against Tottenham away, it’s always being very difficult,” the Spaniard said.<\/p>\n

“But we competed fantastic. We were defending collectively strong the first half. We needed the ‘keeper, we needed (to) defend a lot of corners defensively and we were resilient.”<\/p>\n

With over half of the starting XI made up of new arrivals, the Villa boss also stressed that the squad is still adapting.<\/p>\n

“We must adapt the new players, and we need to try to create and to build our structure, feeling comfortable each one, getting confident, and today is really fantastic how we did,” Emery added.<\/p>\n

“I think we are more or less getting confidence, collectively and individually, and trying to adapt our new players in the standard we have, and in the demands we have, and in the mentality we need.”<\/p>\n

All that squad turnover has left Emery experimenting to find the right balance. So far, that balance hasn’t involved Alejandro Garnacho.<\/p>\n

The Argentine joined on a season-long loan from Chelsea in the summer but is yet to start a game for Villa, playing just 31 minutes in total. He was an unused substitute in each of the last three matches, against Nottingham Forest, Tottenham and Coventry City in the Carabao Cup.<\/p>\n

Emery named a heavily rotated side for the Coventry game and still didn’t turn to him, while younger options including Manzambi, Ibrahim Mbaye, George Hemmings and Alysson have all been given minutes ahead of him this season.<\/p>\n

Emery has publicly backed the winger, praising his attitude but also admitting he is not at the required level just yet: “We want him at the same level he was for Chelsea in the first part of last season and in Manchester two years ago.”<\/p>\n

“He is a player we have signed for a long time, and we will help him to feel comfortable and confident to get his quality.<\/p>\n

“Every training session we are doing, he is showing he can play matches. He played a few minutes, but it was not enough, firstly due to the minutes he played and the things he showed.<\/p>\n

“Progressively, I am seeing him better. The most important thing is being consistent and demanding through the attitude he has. Then, I believe and I trust that he will achieve his best performance.”<\/p>\n

That patience may not be shared by the player himself. Football FanCast sources understand that Garnacho is keen to leave Villa Park if he doesn’t start getting more opportunities soon.<\/p>\n

Getting out won’t be straightforward however. According to The Telegraph, his loan has no January break clause for either club. Chelsea can’t recall him, and Villa can’t send him back on their own. Both clubs would have to agree to end the deal early, which could lead to a tense standoff if the Argentine tries to force his way out.<\/p>\n

Chelsea are unlikely to agree unless another club takes over the loan and guarantees him regular football, with La Liga the most likely destination.<\/p>\n

Villa have been in a similar spot before. Last season, Liverpool refused to cut short Harvey Elliott’s loan in January, and he spent the rest of the campaign at Villa Park but largely out of the picture.<\/p>\n

The stakes are higher this time. Garnacho’s loan includes an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met, with a fee thought to be around \u00a343m. If those conditions are triggered, Villa could be committing big money next summer to a player who wants to leave and one who the manager doesn’t seem to have room for.<\/p>\n
