When United States Men’s National Team<\/a> coach Mauricio Pochettino<\/a> introduced his first post-World Cup roster on Thursday, Sept. 17, he was full of excitement for the future.<\/p>\n “The project is 2030,” he said<\/a>. “That needs to be our aim. The next camp is going to be an opportunity to bring in players that can be involved in that four-year process with the possibility to arrive to 2030 in the best condition.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n He’s right. International soccer follows a four-year arc \u2014 each one separated by the next World Cup \u2014 and today, the USMNT finds itself at the precipice of a new one. It’s set to take on Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada in international friendlies this fall to kick off its cycle in earnest.<\/p>\n But what goes into that cycle? What competitions will the USMNT feature in over the coming years? When will they happen and why will they matter? And how will they bleed into the all-important 2030 World Cup?<\/p>\n The Concacaf Nations League was introduced in 2019 as a way to add jeopardy and importance to North and Central America’s friendly matches, but in practice, it’s still just a series of friendlies with a trophy at the end. The USMNT should try to win it \u2014 the media narrative that developed after it crashed out of the 2025 edition in the semifinal round proves that losing is a huge problem for many \u2014 but it’s not the team’s most important competition. The USMNT will kick off its next Nations League campaign in November 2026 in Cincinnati; if it wins that tie, it will advance to the semifinal round in Los Angeles in March 2027.<\/p>\n The first Gold Cup \u2014 North America’s biennial continental championship \u2014 after a World Cup is always a wild, experimental thing. North America’s best teams are usually in the middle of a post-World Cup reset by that point, but not quite far along enough in the process to know which players it will anchor around for the future. The USMNT’s squad at the 2023 Gold Cup, for instance, featured just four players who went on to make its 2026 World Cup roster: goalkeeper Matt Turner, midfielder Cristian Roldan, attacker Alex Zendejas and ever-present defender Miles Robinson (who has made far more USMNT tournament rosters than you’d think).<\/p>\n The relative un-seriousness of this edition of the Gold Cup means that some of the USMNT’s best players will sit it out, much like Christian Pulisic\u00a0<\/a>did in the summer of 2025. That should give some of the team’s fringe players the chance to prove their bonafides in an environment where they’re the stars. Malik Tillman and Diego Luna were the breakout stars of Gold Cup 2025; the USMNT will wait with bated breath to see who follows their lead in 2027.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n
