With small wheels and folding frames, these bikes can be collapsed down to a small size for storage or transport and quickly unfolded to ride when needed. Generally speaking, however, that foldable convenience results in bikes with rider weight and height limitations. That’s what sets Dahon’s Mariner XL apart from the competition.

The folding bike specialists at Dahon specifically designed and engineered the Mariner XL with bigger and taller riders in mind. With a reinforced, heavy-duty frame, the Mariner XL has a maximum weight capacity of 330 pounds (150 kg). Its 22-inch wheels are larger than those found on most folding bikes, and it features a huge range of handlebar and seat height adjustment to fit riders up to 6’9” (206 cm).

Dahon Mariner XL

Dahon has been making a range of folding bikes for years. We’ve reported on them for well over a decade. Over the years, it seems that Dahon recognized that heavier and taller riders were being excluded from the folding bike market, so they designed the Mariner XL.

“The Mariner XL is a technical breakthrough for folding bikes,” said Dr. David T. Hon, CEO of DAHON. “We wanted to ensure that folding technology is completely inclusive, removing the physical boundaries that have historically kept larger riders from experiencing the freedom of micro-mobility. With the Mariner XL, they can ride bold and ride strong, knowing their equipment is thoroughly tested and designed specifically for them.”

The Mariner XL features a robust frame that has a class-leading weight capacity of 330 pounds (150 kg). We’re told it’s made from aviation-grade aluminum alloy, and all of the key components — frame, fork, and seatpost — have been tested and validated to withstand 50% higher loads than required for standard city bikes. Additionally, Dahon says its DelTech Technology increases frame stiffness, while the Super Down Tube optimizes coupling strength.

22-Inch Wheels

Often, folding bikes are equipped with the smallest wheels possible to facilitate the most compact folded size for easier storage or portability. Brompton, for example, uses 16-inch wheels on most of its popular folding bikes. The Mariner XL bucks that trend with 22-inch wheels. This should enhance stability and efficiency, and theoretically be a better fit for bigger, taller riders. The 1.95” wide tires are also claimed to provide some shock absorption and a larger contact patch for multi-surface traction.

Adjustability

According to Dahon, the Mariner XL was designed to fit riders from 5’1” to 6’9” (157 to 206 cm). This is possible with an extra-long seatpost and an extended one-piece forged stem and patented double-joint handlebars that are height- and angle-adjustable. Compared to the standard Mariner, the XL version offers 60mm more handlebar height adjustment.

Weight and Size

Even with its heavy-duty frame, higher weight limit, and 22-inch wheels, the Mariner XL weighs a claimed 31.6 pounds. It doesn’t fold down quite as small as some other models, but the claimed folded size of 33.4” x 29.5” x 15” (85 x 75 x 38 cm) seems very respectable for a bike that can support riders up to 6’9” and/or 330 pounds.

Pricing and Availability

The Mariner XL comes with an 8-speed Shimano drivetrain, Tektro Hydraulic disc brakes, and is offered in four frame colors: Matte Obsidian, Frost Gray, Wine, and Leaf Green.
