The lip-readers were out in full force following Roberto De Zerbi‘s public dressing down of Tottenham Hotspur man, Mathys Tel, in the aftermath of the stalemate with Everton.

The general consensus was that, in the wake of the Italian’s animated feedback, the young Frenchman had responded with the line: “I just want to play football”.

If his omission from the matchday squad against Aston Villa last time out is anything to go by, he might not get to do that for much longer in north London, not least if a replacement is signed.

When Bayern Munich had plucked a teenage Tel from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes, the feeling was that the German giants had signed “one of the biggest talents in Europe”, in the view of then Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.

By January 2025, he was on the move to Spurs in search of regular game time, having since signed permanently later that year for a fee of around £30m.

While still only 21, the youngster has had pushing two years now to impress in a Tottenham shirt, yet hasn’t quite ever found his groove, hence the uncertainty surrounding his future heading into January.

Indeed, as Football FanCast has exclusively reported, De Zerbi is keen to sell Tel alongside Richarlison, with the younger man arguably the bigger priority to shift by all accounts.

Spurs are hoping to rake in a ‘good fee’ for the £30m speedster, with that sale likely to help aid the pursuit of a replacement.

Would Spurs be right to sell Tel?

For all the chaos in the dugout, at some stage this group of players need to be held accountable, with Tel among those to now be working under his fourth Tottenham manager.

Such upheaval isn’t a good look for any player, yet it doesn’t bode well that he has never really looked like a favourite for any of the men at the helm, his overall record for the club making for grim reading.

There were signs of life over pre-season, as there were for Richarlison, yet the France U21 star hasn’t delivered when it’s mattered, scoring and assisting just 11 goals in 64 games in all competitions.

His absence against Villa, as a result of a ‘technical’ decision, feels rather ominous, with Tel doing himself no favours after struggling to get the better of Jeremie Frimpong at Anfield in the Carabao Cup.

The forward line as a whole still remains off the boil, yet moving Tel on after over 18 months of woe feels like the correct decision.

The merits of ENIC’s lavish spending over the summer are still yet to be seen, not least in the forward line, with the only Premier League goals this season having been scored by Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke.
