After spending just over £300m in the summer, this was not in the script for Tottenham Hotspur.

Roberto De Zerbi wanted Premier League-proven players and it made sense. These players were not going to need long to settle. They were going to come and instantly help Spurs shoot up the league.

Yet, that simply hasn’t happened. After back-to-back 17th-place finishes, ending up bottom of the league at the first international break was not on the agenda in the slightest.

The biggest problem? Certainly their attack.

How Spurs can improve their attack internally

Over the summer, Tottenham paid £85m to sign Savio from Manchester City. They also signed Mykhailo Mudryk and Omar Marmoush on initial loan deals.

On reflection, it is perhaps not the best business, and that’s shone through in the early season performances of two of those players.

Mudryk has only played 16 minutes since arriving due to injury, but despite a riproaring goalscoring debut from Savio, he and Marmoush have underwhelmed.

Neither player have registered a goal involvement in the league. In fact, not many at the club have done so.

It took De Zerbi’s side five games to score their first two Premier League goals of the season and that came in a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa prior to the international break.

So, what’s the solution? It’s not all just about spending more money. One quick fix is likely to be moving Mateus Fernandes out of his role as the most advanced midfielder.

He has largely operated as a number 10 since signing but as De Zerbi admitted after withdrawing him at half-time in that clash with Villa, he “did not like” the display.

So moving him back would certainly help, as would playing Marmoush ahead of Dominic Solanke at the top end of the attack.

Combine him with a more creative number 10 like James Maddison or Mohammed Kudus and the Italian will surely see a set of improved performances after the break.

How Spurs can improve their attack in the transfer window

This was a seismic transfer window for Spurs but it had the potential to be even greater.

Indeed, at one stage it looked as though the Lilywhites would end up with either Cody Gakpo or Iliman Ndiaye. Gakpo had agreed personal terms with Spurs before Manchester City came calling.

However, that move was always going to be dictated by whether Liverpool could be able to sign another winger to supplement the arrivals of Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola. That did not happen.

As a result, despite Spurs having a £60m agreement in place to sign Ndiaye from Everton, City hijacked that move and signed the Senegalese themselves.

So, there is a sense that come January, Tottenham could be in the market for another winger. Reports this week from other sources suggest that Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma is on their radar.

We can now reveal the latest on the player’s future. Indeed, Football FanCast sources understand that with Mitoma’s contract expiring next summer, the Japanese is set to seek an exit from the Amex.

At the moment, the idea of moving to Tottenham greatly appeals to him, largely due to his prior relationship with De Zerbi.

While it was under Graham Potter’s tutelage that Mitoma first signed, it was with the Italian that he really became a household name in the Premier League.

He scored 13 goals and registered 16 assists during his 62 matches with De Zerbi at the helm, indicating that he certainly knows how to get the best out of Mitoma.

While the winger’s contract may be expiring in 2027, Brighton are looking to use the £60m fee that City paid for Ndiaye as a starting point for any negotiations.

Previously described as “one of the best wingers in the world” by Shaun Wright-Phillips, Spurs are hoping that the forward’s current contract status means they can land him for a cut-price fee.
