Bhuvneshwar had been performing consistently in T20 cricket for a long time, particularly in the IPL, yet the selectors continued to overlook him for India’s T20I side. So why has the door suddenly opened now?

The bigger reason appears to be the 2027 ODI World Cup. Bhuvneshwar is already 36 and will be around 39 by the next T20 World Cup after 2028, making it difficult to see this as a long-term T20I investment. Instead, India have a much more immediate problem to solve: they are running out of reliable fast-bowling options for the ODI World Cup in Southern Africa.

With less than a year remaining before the tournament, Jasprit Bumrah remains India’s only completely established fast-bowling option when available. Injuries, expensive spells and inconsistency among the other pacers have left the selectors searching for answers. That situation has brought Bhuvneshwar back into the picture.

India’s Pace-Bowling Problem Is Getting Serious

India have tried several fast bowlers while preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the pace attack remains far from settled.

Jasprit Bumrah is the one established name when available. Beyond him, India have struggled to find pacers who can consistently combine wicket-taking ability with control.

Harshit Rana has taken wickets, but controlling the scoring rate has remained an issue. His ODI economy rate currently stands above six runs per over. More importantly, availability has also become a concern. Rana suffered a Grade 1 right-hamstring injury during India’s tour of England earlier this year and was subsequently ruled out of the ODI series.

That combination — injuries plus expensive spells — makes it difficult for India to simply build their World Cup pace attack around him.

Prasidh Krishna presents a somewhat similar problem. His height and ability to generate bounce make him an interesting option for South African conditions, but he too has struggled with both consistency and fitness.

During the recent West Indies ODI series, Prasidh conceded 45 runs from only five overs in Guwahati before suffering a left-hamstring injury. The injury ruled him out of the third ODI.

His overall numbers in 2026 are better than some of India’s other experiments, with 16 wickets from nine ODIs, but he has conceded 443 runs from 75.3 overs. India therefore still need greater control and, importantly, confidence that their frontline pacers will remain available.

Read next →Virat Kohli Accused of Taking ₹5 Crore to Visit Premanand Ji Maharaj’s AshramVirat Kohli faces a ₹5 crore allegation over his Premanand Maharaj ashram visit. Here is what Dinesh Falahari claimed and what is known.

Gurnoor Brar Has Taken Wickets But Runs Remain a Major Concern

Gurnoor Brar has been given a significant run because his height and bounce could potentially make him useful in South Africa.

The problem is his economy rate.

Against West Indies, Brar returned figures of 0/60, 2/96 and 1/64 across the three ODIs. Earlier in England, he had conceded 97 runs from his 10 overs in one match.

After nine ODIs, Brar has 14 wickets, but his economy rate is above seven runs per over. That is a major concern for a bowler being considered as part of India’s World Cup plans.

India need wicket-takers, but in ODI cricket a bowler cannot repeatedly concede seven, eight or nine runs per over and expect the batting unit to keep covering the damage.

Auqib Nabi’s Debut Highlighted the Same Problem

Auqib Nabi was another option India tried, but his ODI debut against West Indies showed just how exposed the pace attack can become when conditions favour batting.

Nabi conceded 84 runs from 8.5 overs without taking a wicket. It was the most runs conceded by an Indian bowler on ODI debut.

His economy rate of 9.51 was also the worst for an Indian ODI debutant among bowlers who delivered at least 30 balls.

One bad match should not define a young fast bowler’s career, particularly on a batting-friendly surface. But from India’s perspective, the performance added to an already worrying pattern.

The team is searching for a dependable pacer to support Bumrah, but many of the options being tested are either leaking runs, suffering injuries, or still trying to establish themselves at international level.

Why Bhuvneshwar Kumar Suddenly Makes Sense

This is where Bhuvneshwar Kumar becomes relevant again.

His IPL 2026 performance showed that age has not taken away his control. Bhuvneshwar finished the season with 28 wickets and an economy rate of 7.95, ending just one wicket behind Kagiso Rabada in the Purple Cap race.

In a format where bowlers are regularly attacked from the first over, those numbers stand out.

Bhuvneshwar also offers India control at both ends of an innings. With the new ball, his ability to swing the ball both ways can create early wickets without forcing him to sacrifice accuracy. At the death, his ability to execute yorkers makes it difficult for batters to score freely against him. He can also mix those yorkers with slower deliveries and changes of pace, making him harder to line up when batters are looking for boundaries.

That becomes particularly important when compared with India’s current problem. Several of the pacers being tested can take wickets, but they have also leaked runs heavily. Bhuvneshwar’s value is not simply that he can take wickets; it is his ability to put pressure on batters without repeatedly giving away easy boundaries.

His IPL 2026 economy rate of 7.95 becomes even more significant in that context. Maintaining an economy below eight in T20 cricket while also finishing among the season’s leading wicket-takers shows the combination India have been struggling to find — wickets with control.

Bhuvneshwar’s Bowling Could Suit South African Conditions

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, making the nature of India’s pace attack especially important.

South African conditions can offer pace, bounce and seam movement. Bhuvneshwar’s biggest weapon has always been his ability to swing and seam the new ball while maintaining control over his line and length.

The bigger advantage is that India would not need him to compete with Bumrah for exactly the same role. Bhuvneshwar can attack with swing and accuracy with the new ball, while Bumrah provides pace, awkward angles and effectiveness across different phases of an innings.

Bhuvneshwar’s death bowling could be equally valuable. When conditions stop offering movement and batters begin attacking in the final overs, his yorkers and variations give him another method of controlling the scoring rate. For an Indian ODI attack that has repeatedly struggled to stop runs once batters get on top, that skill set could provide much-needed balance.

Read next →PCB Demands Apology from Indian Players as Pakistan Champions Pull Out of WCL 2026World Championship of Legends 2026 loses Pakistan Champions after the PCB demands an apology from Indian players over last season’s boycott.

Bhuvneshwar Also Gives India Something With the Bat

There is another factor that should not be ignored.

Bhuvneshwar is not a genuine all-rounder, but he is a technically capable lower-order batter. He has scored 552 runs in ODIs and another 552 runs in Test cricket, where he has three half-centuries.

His ODI career also includes a half-century.

For a team looking for depth at No. 8 or No. 9, the ability to contribute 15-25 useful runs can matter. Bhuvneshwar has shown during his international career that he can stay at the crease, defend properly and contribute when the top and middle order have already been dismissed.

That gives him another advantage over a specialist tailender.

T20Is Could Be the First Step Towards an ODI Return

This is what makes his selection for the New Zealand T20Is particularly interesting.

Bhuvneshwar has not played an ODI for India since January 2022 and has played very little List A cricket in recent years. Putting him straight into a demanding 50-over international series after such a long gap would therefore carry obvious risks.

T20Is provide India with an easier route to bring him back into international cricket and assess his fitness, rhythm and ability to handle the workload again.

If his body responds well, the next step could be getting him back into 50-over cricket before assessing whether he can become part of India’s ODI World Cup plans.

That would also explain why a bowler who had been consistently performing in the IPL without receiving an India recall has suddenly returned now. His recent T20 performances were already strong enough to keep his name in discussion. What has changed is India’s situation in ODI cricket.

With Harshit Rana dealing with injury concerns while also proving expensive, Prasidh Krishna again suffering a hamstring problem, Gurnoor Brar conceding runs at an alarming rate and Auqib Nabi’s first ODI experiment going badly, India’s options have narrowed considerably.

Mohammed Shami’s fitness and availability also remain factors India cannot simply ignore while planning so far ahead.

The selectors therefore have a serious problem to solve before the 2027 ODI World Cup. Bumrah cannot carry an entire pace attack alone, and India are still searching for another bowler whose place can be considered secure.

That search has eventually brought them back to Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

His age means this is unlikely to be about building India’s T20I attack for years to come. His experience, control, new-ball movement, deadly yorkers, death-over variations, recent form and useful lower-order batting, however, could still have considerable value in ODI cricket.

The New Zealand T20Is may therefore only be the starting point. The much bigger target is the 2027 ODI World Cup.

        Article link

Get cricket updates.
