(No, not New Zealand, the other one.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, as I mentioned, the deadline for submissions is \u201c12:00pm EST on October 16th,\u201d but then someone pointed out that 12:00pm EST is actually 1:00pm DST, which I didn\u2019t even think about, and which would open up a legal loophole for submissions that are an hour late (at least according to my attorneys)\u2013and if that wasn\u2019t confusing enough, every year they say we\u2019re finally getting rid of daylight savings anyway, but it never happens, and then you have other countries that don\u2019t have daylight savings, or they do have it but change the clocks on different days, and so forth.  So no wonder the world\u2019s such a big mess.  Clearly we should just get rid of daylight savings, and clocks, and the concept of time altogether.  Instead we could simply track time the natural way, by following the sun and the moon and our menstrual cycles, and maybe then everyone would stop fighting and love each other.  In the meantime, two seconds of popular search engine jockeying indicates to avoid confusion you\u2019re just supposed to specify \u201cET,\u201d but that itself seems confusing, so let\u2019s just say that when it\u2019s non on October 16th here in New York that\u2019s when submission window closes.  (That\u2019s chronological noon, and not solar noon.) I think people should be able to engage freely in the buying and selling of goods with minimal government interference. For many years, cyclocross in most places was like nine people standing around in a field talking about how this sport was massively popular in Belgium.  But then in the aughts it started getting popular everywhere, and every bike company started offering an off-the-rack cyclocross bike, and more and more people started riding these bikes on unpaved roads and dirt trails and stuff. At first people called this \u201cgravel,\u201d but vowels are almost as mentally taxing as front derailleurs, so they shortened it to \u201cGRVL.\u201d  Then people forgot all about cylocross\u2026though according to the article\u2019s headline, they\u2019re now remembering again, and all you need in order to take part is a\u2026<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RECORD SCRATCH Sound Effect\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CPGcpIXeA-4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026gravel bike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So there it is.  Gravel is now the gateway to cyclocross, which was once the gateway to gravel.  And there\u2019s your Gravel\/Cyclocross Inversion Point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the way, one reason for the early-aughts cyclocross boom was its fun and friendly atmosphere:<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Cheering on the race, with the help of a continental lager \u2013 it is a CX race after all \u2013 I was taken by just how fun and friendly it looked, with a few of the competitors even thanking us for the support as they went round. It was far from the intimidating event that it could have been, that the world of road racing certainly seems to me, hill-climbing is similarly open. People just turn up with a bike they are prepared to ride off-road on, pay the fee (which in this case was \u00a325), learn the course, and race for under an hour. The risks are low, especially the muddier it is. There are no open roads, no cars, it\u2019s fun, and unless you\u2019re battling at the front, it\u2019s unlikely to be overly competitive. At least that\u2019s how it seemed to me. There are technical bits, but nothing insurmountable, especially at the beginning of the season; then the worse the weather gets, the more the chaos mounts too.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though I must say that in this part of the world that was not my experience.  That\u2019s not to say it wasn\u2019t fun or that people weren\u2019t friendly, because it was and they were.  However, in New England and the Mid-Atlantic region people came to cyclocross races to\u2026you know, race.  And they did, too\u2013dare I say quite seriously.  You really didn\u2019t find <a href=\"https:\/\/bikeportland.org\/2021\/11\/01\/photo-gallery-halloween-cross-in-cascade-locks-340638\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this sort of grueling 200-mile rides in order to escape the Irony Crew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking of cyclocross, though I\u2019ve mostly de-fanged and borderline JBARA-ed it, the Farbman is that is so profound it\u2019s almost disconcerting\u2013plus, the two-bolt seatpost is sufficiently robust for the remounts I\u2019ll never do, since the chances of my ever cyclocrossing again are
