Ask yourself when was the last time you donated blood. If you meet the conditions to be a donor, there is no excuse not to contribute to one of the greatest acts of solidarity. You don’t have to wait for someone close to you to need it.

It’s true that sometimes athletes hesitate to donate because we have doubts about how a donation could affect our athletic performance. We should be honest, and the short answer is yes, although the impact depends on several factors: the type of donation, the intensity of training, the sport we practice, and, above all, the timing in the season when we decide to donate.

Less blood, reduced oxygen transport capacity

For an athlete, the main effect of donating blood isn’t so much the loss of blood volume as the temporary reduction in red blood cells and hemoglobin, the protein responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the muscles.

The plasma, which makes up a large portion of blood volume, recovers relatively quickly. However, the production of new red blood cells takes longer. Therefore, even though we may feel seemingly normal a few days after donating, our maximum capacity to transport oxygen can still be below the usual level.

And this is especially relevant in endurance sports. Studies conducted with athletes and trained individuals have observed declines in VO₂max and in maximum exercise capacity after a whole blood donation. In a controlled study with moderately trained people, VO₂max was reduced by up to 10% and hemoglobin mass by about 7% during a four-week follow-up.

Another study observed that, three days after donating, VO₂max had decreased by 6.5% and time-trial performance by 5.2%. In that work, performance had returned to baseline values approximately around 14 days, although some blood parameters, such as hemoglobin, took longer to recover.

This does not mean that every athlete will lose 5 or 10% of performance. These results come from specific groups and individual responses can vary greatly. But they provide an important idea: donating blood can have a measurable effect on performance, especially when we need our maximum aerobic capacity.

When is it most noticeable?

The first days are the most delicate. A review of several studies found reductions in hemoglobin, VO₂max, and maximum exercise capacity during the first 24-48 hours after a conventional donation. Therefore, the day of donation itself is not a good time to train hard, and logically one should avoid scheduling sets, high-intensity sessions, long runs, competitions, or particularly demanding workouts immediately afterward.

Additionally, there is another factor that is sometimes overlooked: donation can temporarily affect cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses. A study with cyclists exercising in warm conditions observed changes in heart rate and temperature regulation after donation. These acute effects disappeared roughly within two days.

The practical recommendation is simple: treat the donation day as a rest day and resume exercise gradually, especially if dizziness, weakness, or fatigue appear.

So, what is the best time to donate?

If you train for health or recreationally, you probably don’t need to complicate the calendar too much. But if you have specific athletic goals, it is worth planning. The worst option is to donate in the weeks preceding an important competition, especially if we are talking about a endurance event where small changes in performance can make a substantial difference.

Marathon, half-marathon, road cycling, triathlon, trail running, cross-country skiing, or long-distance events are disciplines where the ability to transport oxygen is particularly important. In these cases, it makes sense to avoid donating close to the main target of the season.

In these cases, it makes sense to avoid donating near the main objective of the season.

The training traffic light

🟢 Green: walking, mobility, and very light activity if you feel well.

🟡 Yellow: moderate training in the following days, gradually increasing the load.

🔴 Red: competition, maximum intervals, HIIT, long runs, very demanding workouts, or sessions in hot conditions immediately after donation.

Source link

Donating blood is a simple gesture that can save lives, and athletes should set an example.
