The coincidence of an election day with major long-distance races poses a logistical challenge for cities, since for several hours it is necessary to guarantee both the proper running of the events and the access of all citizens to their polling stations. Traffic closures and the usual restrictions in a race can hinder that access, especially when the route passes through areas with voting centers.<\/p>\n
It wouldn\u2019t be the first time this happens. In 2019, the general elections coincided with the Behobia-San Sebasti\u00e1n, one of the most crowded races on the national calendar. The organizers had to design several bypasses along the route to allow runners to continue the event without blocking access to certain polling stations. The solution consisted of temporarily diverting participants along alternative itineraries at certain points, thereby guaranteeing coexistence between the race and the election day.<\/p>\n
On the upcoming November 29, several races will have to face a similar situation, some of them with thousands of participants. These are the main races on the calendar of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation that coincide with the elections:<\/p>\n
It is, by far, the race with the greatest potential participation among all those that coincide with the elections. The organizers allocated 20,000 bib numbers for the 2026 edition.<\/p>\n
The race will cover 21.097 kilometers, with start and finish on Paseo de las Delicias. The scheduled time is from 9:00 to about 12:00, so a large part of the race will take place while polling stations remain open.<\/p>\n
Another major event that will coincide with the elections is the 103rd Allianz Jean Bouin in Barcelona. The day includes 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer races, as well as various promotional events, and brings together approximately 18,000 to 20,000 participants.<\/p>\n
In terms of participant numbers, it ranks among the most crowded events of that Sunday, and its route through the streets of Barcelona will require consideration of the usual traffic closures and restrictions. The organizers will need to coordinate the progress of the races with citizens\u2019 access to polling stations, especially in the areas through which the various routes pass.<\/p>\n
The C\u00f3rdoba event also marks a special edition: its 40th anniversary. The race is scheduled for 10:00 on November 29 and has sold out its 7,800 bib numbers.<\/p>\n
Its urban route crosses a large portion of the city and ends at Puerta del Puente, so the overlap with the elections may also require special traffic coordination and access to polling stations.<\/p>\n
The second edition of the marathon linking Elche and Alicante will also take place on November 29. The race covers a distance of 42.195 kilometers, starting in Elche and finishing at the Port of Alicante.<\/p>\n
By June the organizers already had more than 2,000 registrants, against an anticipated limit of 4,000 participants. The course crosses both cities and combines urban and interurban sections, so Election Day could add a significant logistical challenge.<\/p>\n
One of the Basque calendar\u2019s classic races also coincides with the elections. The From Santurce to Bilbao will celebrate its 38th edition on November 29, with a start at 11:00 and a 15-kilometer route between Santurtzi and Bilbao.<\/p>\n
Being a linear event that connects two municipalities, the circuit affects a particularly large area and may require coordination with polling stations located along the route.<\/p>\n
The RFEA calendar also places the Cross Alcobendas\u2013Community of Madrid \u2013 Memorial Antonio Rodr\u00edguez Benavente on Sunday, November 29.<\/p>\n
Unlike road races, a cross held in a sports facility presents fewer traffic-disruption issues, although the overlap with the elections can still affect organization and access for participants and the public.<\/p>\n
The election day also coincides with the 28th Cerro Buenavista Walking Trophy, included in the RFEA calendar.<\/p>\n
Thus, walking events join the roster of popular and road races that will have to coexist with a nationally scoped election day.<\/p>\n
Ibiza\u2019s case is different because it is a stage race. The 3 Days Trail Ibiza will be held from November 27 to 29, and the final day exactly on the election Sunday.<\/p>\n
The event offers different distances and formats, including 10 kilometers, a half marathon, a marathon, and an ultra, with the Sunday stage taking place in Santa Eulalia del R\u00edo.<\/p>\n
The coincidence of a race with elections also raises a question for participants. Being chosen to serve on a polling station board is mandatory, unless there is a legal reason that allows an exemption.<\/p>\n
Having a race or a marathon on the same day does not automatically confer an exemption. In previous electoral processes this situation has already arisen, and it was analyzed what could happen when a runner had a race they had been preparing for months.<\/p>\n
For now, the main challenge for organizers will be to find a way to guarantee the smooth running of the races while also ensuring that all citizens have access to the polling stations. The Behobia experience in 2019 shows that there are solutions, such as bypasses or point-by-point detours, although their application will depend on the characteristics and routes of each event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
