He explained that Indian cricket has seen several exceptionally talented youngsters, but not everyone has managed to establish themselves at the international level.

According to Kapil, a player’s true potential should be judged only after he has handled international pressure and delivered consistent performances for two or three years.

He cited former Indian batter Vinod Kambli, who made an extraordinary start to his international career but could not maintain that early success over a long period.

Indian cricket has witnessed other promising youngsters, including Prithvi Shaw and Unmukt Chand, who were once regarded as future superstars but failed to establish themselves as long-term regulars in the senior Indian team.

Kapil’s message was clear: Early success and extraordinary talent do not guarantee a great international career.

Read next →Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or Sanju Samson? India have reportedly settled their opening combination for the second T20I against West Indies. Check the expected XI.

Kapil Dev Wants Someone Who Can Replace Virat Kohli

Kapil Dev also questioned the obsession with identifying India’s next cricketing hero.

For him, the real question is not who can produce a few sensational innings, but who can replace Virat Kohli and maintain world-class performances for 15 years.

Kohli’s longevity, consistency and ability to deliver under pressure are what Kapil considers the true standards of greatness.

A youngster may dominate one IPL season, but sustaining that level of performance for more than a decade against the world’s best bowlers is an entirely different challenge.

That is why Kapil believes it is premature to declare Sooryavanshi India’s next superstar.

But Has Indian Cricket Ever Seen Talent Like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?

While Kapil Dev makes a valid argument about long-term consistency, his criticism of the excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi appears unnecessarily harsh.

The IPL has featured the world’s greatest batters for nearly two decades. Yet Sooryavanshi has already produced an extraordinary season at just 15 years of age.

His remarkable IPL 2026 campaign, featuring 776 runs at a strike rate above 230, demonstrates why he is being considered a generational talent.

What makes these numbers even more astonishing is the manner in which he has scored those runs. Rather than adopting a cautious approach, Sooryavanshi has attacked experienced international bowlers with remarkable confidence.

And his achievements are not limited to the IPL.

His sensational 175-run innings in the Under-19 World Cup final against England is another example of his extraordinary ability. Producing such a knock in a World Cup final at that age is something cricket fans rarely witness.

He has consistently challenged expectations and broken records at an age when most young cricketers are still developing their game.

Kapil Dev Is Right About Consistency, But Wrong to Question the Hype

There is no guarantee that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will become the next Virat Kohli. Even the most gifted youngsters can struggle when they enter international cricket.

But calling Sooryavanshi the next big thing is not the same as declaring him an established legend. It is a recognition of the extraordinary potential he has already demonstrated.

Kapil Dev is absolutely right that a player’s greatness can only be established through years of consistent performances.

However, dismissing the excitement around Sooryavanshi simply because other talented youngsters failed in the past would be unfair.

The 15-year-old has already achieved things that many established international cricketers have never managed. His IPL dominance, record-breaking batting and historic Under-19 World Cup final innings justify the enormous expectations surrounding him.

Whether he eventually becomes a legendary cricketer remains to be seen. But judging by his achievements so far, there is every reason to believe that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could become India’s next big superstar.

Read next →India’s Coach Gives Shocking Explanation for Bhuvi’s Selection; World Cup 2027 Hopes Fading Away?India coach Sitanshu Kotak gives a surprising explanation for Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s selection.
