Then Kipchoge went up a gear and dominated to the finish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Looking as if he has just done a training run, Kipchoge then spent well over half an hour celebrating with fans along the MCG boundary fence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Kipchoge was mobbed by media at the finish and took the chaos in his stride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe crowd is so wonderful \u2013 I\u2019ve never seen a crowd like this,\u201d he said. \u201cMelbourne is really, really a sporting city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI believe that my body is still peaking \u2013 still able to compete with the next generation. The oldest athlete is still competing, but I am happy to run with the Gen Zs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI [increased] the pace after 30km, to see whether I can run well and beat the [race record]. My plan went well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Kipchoge had said repeatedly over the last few days that his Melbourne visit was more than just another race. This is the best track ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Kipchoge could have finished a few seconds quicker, but was waving to the crowd on the half-lap inside the MCG to the finish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">This is his second visit to Australia and his Melbourne Marathon debut. The Kenyan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/aug\/31\/sydney-marathon-major-sifan-hassan-hailemaryam-kiros\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finished ninth in the 2025 Sydney Marathon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Australian Thomas Do Canto was runner-up in 2:10:35 and Whelan was fifth.
