After finishing third in 2024 and second in 2025, Amos Kipruto has asserted his authority at the Chicago Marathon 2026 with a time of 2:01:09, tying the personal best of Eliud Kipchoge. The Kenyan athlete surged to the lead in the final kilometers after sustaining an intense duel with the great favorite, Jacob Kiplimo, winner of last year’s edition and holder of an astronomical mark, 2:00:28, achieved at the London Marathon, where the Ugandan crossed the finish ahead of Kipruto. However, Kiplimo could not respond to Kipruto’s acceleration, which quickly opened a gap over his rival with only a few kilometers left to reach the finish.

Kipruto, the fifth-fastest marathoner in history, had posted this year a 2:01:29 at the London Marathon, and together with Sabastian Sawe, Yomif Kejelcha and the very Kiplimo, is one of the members of the quartet of athletes who dominate the 42.195-kilometer race worldwide.

In the women’s category, the Ethiopian Hawi Feysa, clocking 2:13:33, defended her win from last year by beating Sharon Lokedi (Kenya) and the former world marathon record holder, also Kenyan, Brigid Kosgei. Feysa rises to fourth on the all-time world ranking behind Ruth Chepngetich, Foyten Tesfay and Tigst Assefa, and sits just ahead of one of the greatest athletes of all time, Sifan Hassan.

In the wheelchair category, Marcel Hug claimed his seventh Chicago Marathon victory while Catherine Debrunner was the first athlete to cross the finish line with an unofficial time of 1:33:16, which would constitute a new world record.

View this post on Instagram

A post by Chicago Marathon (@chimarathon)
