Manchester United<\/a> are under increasing pressure following their disappointing start to the season, with Michael Carrick facing serious questions about his future after Saturday’s draw with Tottenham.<\/p>\n

The Red Devils have endured their worst start to a league campaign in 40 years, collecting just six points from their opening six Premier League<\/a> matches, and Saturday’s draw against Spurs did little to ease concerns, with Carrick’s side unable to protect their advantage despite having an extra man.<\/p>\n

Former United captain Gary Neville was particularly critical of the players’ attitude and work rate following another frustrating afternoon at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

“What Manchester United fans will not accept is what they see as a lack of effort, and the truth is that the players are not running enough, nor are they showing the required amount of ferocity, determination and fighting spirit,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The booing tells you that they feel deeply frustrated by what they are watching.”<\/p>\n

Neville also suggested that some members of the squad were struggling to cope with the demands of representing United.<\/p>\n

“What we are seeing at the moment is a team that looks as if it is shrinking into itself, and the club has become bigger than the ability of some of the players to deal with the pressure at the present time,” he added.<\/p>\n

“Carrick shaking his head would mean he is asking: are these players putting in the effort for me? What is happening with this group? Have they lost confidence in themselves? Has their focus slipped? Have they started to collapse? What is going on? Because these are not the players I was working with last season.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n

The mood among supporters has also been worsened by uncertainty surrounding the future of highly rated academy prospect JJ Gabriel<\/a>, who requested the club cancel his registration last month.<\/p>\n

The 16-year-old has been linked with a potential move to Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants reportedly making contact with United over the youngster’s situation.<\/p>\n

The Red Devils have a proud history of producing homegrown talent, with the Busby Babes and Class of ’92 helping establish the identity and fighting spirit that Neville believes is currently missing. Losing Gabriel would therefore represent a significant disappointment, and United could now face another battle to retain a promising academy player following comments from his representative.<\/p>\n
