Australia end Temba Bavuma’s 12-Test unbeaten run

Matt Renshaw was the biggest difference between Australia and South Africa in the Durban Test. His brilliant knocks of 190 and 82, along with two key wickets, helped Australia to register a dominating win over South Africa at Kingsmead on Tuesday, October 13.

Josh Hazlewood also played a key role with a career-best performance, finishing the match with eight wickets. Australia struggled at 124/6 on Day 1, but Renshaw guided the visitors to 390. In reply, the Proteas side could manage only 284, with David Bedingham top-scoring with 49.

Australia then attacked strongly and declared with a 420-run lead. South Africa needed a solid start in the final innings but kept losing wickets despite Aiden Markram’s fighting 75. They were eventually bowled out for 206 to face a heavy 214-run defeat in the first Test against Australia.

With this win, Australia have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series and are now just one victory away from winning a Test series on South African soil. Amid this, WTC Points Table After South Africa vs Australia 1st Test, 2026.

Temba Bavuma loses first Test as captain

However, Temba Bavuma suffered his first defeat as South Africa’s Test captain. Temba Bavuma had enjoyed a dream start as he recorded 11 Test victories as captain before suffering his first defeat. In his first 12 Tests as captain, South Africa won 11 matches and drew one, which was the best start to a captaincy career in the 148-year history of Test cricket.

Earlier, the record was held by England’s Mike Brearley, who won 10 of his first 15 Tests as captain in 1977-78. Well, South Africa also suffered their first home Test defeat after winning four consecutive matches since November 2024.

On the other hand, Australia continued their impressive record at Kingsmead in Durban, securing their fourth consecutive Test victory at the venue since 2006.

Credit to Australia: Temba Bavuma’s honest admission after crushing defeat

After the match, South Africa captain Bavuma admitted that Australia deserved the victory because they showed great class and experience, while Proteas batters failed to turn their good starts into big scores.

Temba Bavuma said at the post-match presentation: “Not the way you want to start, but credit to the Australians for the way they played. Even after being at 124 for 6, they showed their class and experience. We can learn from the way they played, but we’ll have to give it to them. The obvious factor was guys getting in and scoring big. We saw that with Renshaw; many of our players got in but couldn’t convert.”

Bavuma also stressed that his bowlers needed to be more consistent and added that the team would discuss their mistakes and find ways to make a strong comeback in the home series.

The skipper added, “Again from the bowling side, we had to be consistent for long periods of time. We will have a conversation, though. Hard to say, the last time we played here, we beat Sri Lanka. It’s hard to say, but we’ll have to have a good talk about it.”
