Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez launched a remarkable attack on the club’s hierarchy following Tuesday’s Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, accusing the brass of failing to build a squad deep enough to compete in Europe’s elite tournament.<\/p>\n

The Red Devils, now winless in five matches across all competitions, fell 2-0 in the Spanish capital. Their last win was Sept. 10.<\/p>\n

After the “really poor” defeat, the Argentine center-back vented his frustrations with the club’s approach in the summer transfer window, singling out director of football Jason Wilcox for criticism.<\/p>\n

“I have to control myself a lot. But sometimes (the result) is a reflection, the mirror (for our club) at the moment,” Martinez told Amazon Prime<\/a> in a scathing post-match interview in which he admitted Atleti were worthy winners.<\/p>\n

“We did a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top, to bring more players to compete because many teams (sign) many players as well.”<\/p>\n

Asked if the current first-team squad is at the level required to succeed in the Champions League, Martinez took aim at Wilcox without mentioning the club’s director of football by name.<\/p>\n

“I expect more (investment),” the 28-year-old explained. “I expect more from our technical director. I have to be honest, you know? As players we have to do more, but it is also important (to) make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.”<\/p>\n

Man United spent over \u20ac170 million on three new midfielders in the summer – Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos, and Youri Tielemans – but failed to address other areas of the squad that have required upgrades for multiple seasons; many supporters were left bemused by the Premier League club’s inability to land another striker or left-back going into the 2026-27 campaign.<\/p>\n

Manager Michael Carrick has come under intense scrutiny amid the Red Devils’ slump, but Martinez appeared to show his support for the bench boss.<\/p>\n

“(You can’t keep) changing, changing, changing the manager,” the diminutive defender said. “What about other areas? I can’t say more.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
