In recent months, though, his performances speak for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Last year he equalled Mo Farah\u2019s British 10km record with 27:44. The 25-year-old then brought his 10,000m best on the track down to 27:34.08 and half-marathon to 60:32. In December he led the European Cross-Country Championships in Italy before succumbing to Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Still, he took a brilliant silver there and followed it up with a British 10 miles record in March.<\/p>\n<p>So what else do we know about the rising star of British distance running?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>\u00bb <\/i><\/b><\/span>Despite being a Yorkshireman, Cairess supports Arsenal FC. \u201cSome people would consider I\u2019m a plastic fan as I watch most matches on TV,\u201d he says, \u201cbut that\u2019s just the way I enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>\u00bb <\/i><\/b><\/span>As a child Cairess played as a right winger in the Bradford area. \u201cI used to think I was really good,\u201d he says. \u201cWhether I was, you\u2019d have to ask other people. I had an inflated view of my own skill. I was obsessed with Thierry Henry. I idolised him and still do to be fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>\u00bb <\/i><\/b><\/span>After kicking football into touch, it took some time before Cairess made his mark as a runner. Early results included finishing 74th in the 2011 English Schools Cross Country Championships together with a number of modest placings in the Mini London Marathon (30th in 2011, 24th in 2012, 9th in 2013, 12th in 2014, 17th in 2015). \u201cI did it five times but not with much success. I ended up walking it twice and it was only three miles too!\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1039920406\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1039920406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emile Cairess pips Patrick Dever at the 2019 BUCS Champs (Mark Shearman)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>\u00bb <\/i><\/b><\/span>Cairess got a taste of the London Marathon last year by <a href=\"https:\/\/athleticsweekly.com\/athletics-news\/andy-butchart-and-emile-cairess-relish-pacing-duties-1039961448\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pacing the leaders<\/a>. \u201cIt was an amazing experience,\u201d said Cairess. \u201cTo be at the front of the London Marathon, not many Brits can experience it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>\u00bb <\/i><\/b><\/span>A former student at Bradford Grammar, Cairess studied at the same school as Alistair and Jonny Brownlee plus Richard Nerurkar.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>\u00bb <\/i><\/b><\/span>When Cairess broke the European 10 miles record with 45:57 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/athleticsweekly.com\/athletics-news\/emile-cairess-breaks-euro-record-for-10-miles-1039965765\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Podium \u2018Breaking 10\u2019 event<\/a> in Lancashire in March, he broke Nerurkar\u2019s record of 46:02.
