Graham Arnold has named a youthful side for the Socceroos\u2019 upcoming friendly against world champions Argentina in China, with several stars earning recalls and one teenager in line to make his debut.<\/p>\n

The Socceroos\u2019 clash against Argentina takes place on June 15 and Arnold\u2019s squad demonstrates the national boss has one eye very much on the future of the team.<\/p>\n

Sadly a raft of Australian stars will miss the clash due to injury while some of the nation\u2019s most impressive youngsters are away with the Olyroos at the Maurice Revello Tournament in France.<\/p>\n

But when one door closes, another opens and plenty of players will look to take their chance with both hands, even if a handful will not get to see any minutes against the recently-crowned World Cup champions.<\/p>\n

Alessandro Circati<\/b><\/p>\n

Australia has got another dual citizen over the line, with teenage defender Alessandro Circati opting to snub Italy and pledge his international allegiance to the Socceroos.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old, who plays for Parma in the Italian second division, was born in Fidenza but grew up in Perth and was in Perth Glory\u2019s NPL set up before moving to Italy in March 2021.<\/p>\n

Circati had also represented Italy at under-20 level and was an unused substitute for their under-21 side.<\/p>\n

However, the teenage prodigy has since turned down the path of the Azzurri <\/i>and will don the famous green and gold.<\/p>\n

Arnold revealed the decision came after 12 months of communications between the pair as Circati mulled the decision.<\/p>\n

Circati only made the decision two weeks ago in a phone call to the Socceroos boss and is already raring to go.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving Alessandro in camp will be fantastic,\u201d Arnold said.<\/p>\n

With only Harry Souttar and Kye Rowles as the established centre-backs in the team, although defensive midfielder Gianni Stensness is likely to deputise as another centre-back option, it could pave the way for Circati to see game time against the best in the world.<\/p>\n

Denis Genreau<\/b><\/p>\n

Silky midfielder Denis Genreau is back in the national team set-up after finally enjoying a successive run of games for Ligue 1 outfit Toulouse towards the back end of the season.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old had battled with injury issues and was unlucky to miss out on the Socceroos\u2019 World Cup squad, but now has a chance to impress yet again.<\/p>\n

Since April 9, Genreau has started seven games from Toulouse\u2019s nine games and was on the bench for their resounding Coupe De France triumph over Nantes.<\/p>\n

Arnold remarked Genreau has been \u201cdoing exceptionally well\u201d and \u201cthoroughly deserved his call-up.\u201d<\/p>\n

With several of the Socceroos\u2019 midfield stalwarts like Jackson Irvine and Aaron Mooy missing, Genreau won\u2019t get a better chance to impress Arnold and his coaching staff and show them what they were missing.<\/p>\n

Thomas Glover<\/b><\/p>\n

Thomas Glover has been rewarded for a standout season between the sticks for A-League powerhouse Melbourne City.<\/p>\n

Such was the impressive form of the 25-year-old throughout the season, Glover has been heavily linked with a move overseas.<\/p>\n

Arnold reserved special praise for the City gloveman and highlighted his stunning performance against the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League Grand Final.<\/p>\n

\u201cTommy Glover has had a very good season,\u201d Arnold said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWatching him in the grand final the other night, if it wasn\u2019t for Tommy Glover, it would have been 10-1 or 11-1.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s had a very good season and he deserves his call-up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glover\u2019s inclusion alongside Joe Gauci further emphasises Arnold\u2019s willingness to look towards the future between the sticks for the Socceroos.<\/p>\n

Which leads us to our next name and on the other side of the squad selection \u2026<\/p>\n

LOSERS<\/b><\/p>\n

Andrew Redmayne<\/b><\/p>\n

Redmayne will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Australian football fans for his heroics against Peru.<\/p>\n

It booked him a spot in the World Cup squad and also against Ecuador, although he didn\u2019t see any game time.<\/p>\n

However, Father Time is not on his side and, as Arnold pointed out, at some stage he must turn towards the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is question marks on certain players if they will make 2026 and Andrew Redmayne today is 35,\u201d Arnold said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, there\u2019s that side of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know what Redders can do in cups and tournaments and gives Tommy Glover and Joe Gauci this opportunity to come into camp.\u201d<\/p>\n

The era of the grey Wiggle could sadly be coming to a close before we know it.<\/p>\n

Massimo Luongo<\/b><\/p>\n

After a nightmare first half of the season with Middlesbrough where he saw next to no game time at all, Massimo Luongo\u2019s career was at a crossroads.<\/p>\n

But a January move to League One side Ipswich Town revitalised the midfielder who went on to start in 13 of the 15 games he played in, scoring twice.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s most impressive was Ipswich\u2019s form during this time: Luongo didn\u2019t taste defeat once in League One when he got minutes as the Tractor Boys won 13 games en route to securing automatic promotion to the Championship.<\/p>\n

Granted, Luongo is 30 years old and Arnold can make the argument he must give chances to the younger players coming through given he will be picking squads with an eye on the 2026 World Cup.<\/p>\n

Yet not picking the 43-cap Socceroo seems harsh, especially given the form he has shown since returning to Ipswich Town.<\/p>\n

A-League Men\u2019s players<\/b><\/p>\n

It is an issue Arnold has previously harped on about and it has reared its ugly head again.<\/p>\n

The Socceroos boss stated he was \u201creally only able to pick from 2 (A-League) teams from 12\u201d due to the vast majority of A-League players\u2019 seasons already being wrapped up.<\/p>\n

Players from the Mariners and Melbourne City are the freshest, although Arnold still decided to call up Western Sydney Wanderers forward Brandon Borrello, the only player from a non-top two team.<\/p>\n

Yet Arnold warned this issue will prop again in the not-too-distant future and for those playing for teams lower down the table, it could spell danger.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know I keep banging on about it, but you\u2019d hope the APL (Australian Professional Leagues) would start looking at this,\u201d Arnold said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a one-off situation where the rest of the A-League players can\u2019t be selected. This is going to happen in September as well because of a lack of games and not being match fit.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a lot of ways, because of that, it\u2019s taking away opportunities for players to play for their country.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would really hope the APL starts looking at that because I could only pick from two teams.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arnold called for the APL to align the A-League season with leagues in Europe and Asia, but whether he gets his wish remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
