Gerardo Martino<\/strong> is back in Major League Soccer<\/strong> — and this time, he’ll be coaching Lionel Messi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Inter Miami<\/strong> on Wednesday announced Martino<\/strong>‘s as their new head coach, confirming rumors that had been swirling for weeks as to Phil Neville<\/strong>‘s replacement. Martino will return to MLS<\/strong> after a five-year absence, during which he managed the Mexico<\/strong> national team and won a CONCACAF Gold Cup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Martino and Messi working together for the third time<\/h2>\n

Martino<\/strong>‘s return to Major League Soccer<\/a> nearly coincides with Messi<\/strong>‘s debut in North American soccer — which is still poised to be the Leagues Cup<\/strong> match against Cruz Azul<\/strong> on July 21<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Martino and Messi worked together at FC Barcelona<\/strong> during the 2013\/14 season, which saw the Blaugrana<\/strong> lose LaLiga to Atltico Madrid<\/strong> on the season’s final day. Bara<\/strong> were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League<\/strong> at the quarterfinal stage by the same opponent and lost the Copa del Rey<\/strong> final to archrivals Real Madrid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Martino also coached Messi<\/a> for two years with the Argentina <\/strong> national team, guiding the side to Copa America<\/strong> finals in 2015 and 2016.<\/p>\n

Tata seeking more MLS success<\/h2>\n

Martino<\/strong> led Atlanta United<\/strong> as its first-ever coach and guided the expansion franchise to the MLS Cup<\/strong> in 2018 — after which he stepped down to take the Mexico <\/strong> job, in which he remained through the 2022 FIFA World Cup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Martino has won 54 percent of the MLS<\/strong> games he’s coached, which could give comfort to Inter Miami<\/strong> fans tired of seeing their team languish at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.<\/p>\n

While contracted to El Tri<\/strong>, Tata<\/strong> won the CONCACAF Gold Cup<\/strong> in 2019, and Mexico returned to the final in 2021 — only to lose to the United States<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
