Australian manager Alen Stajcic has heralded a \u2018staggering, miraculous and unbelievable\u2019 1-0 victory for his Philippines side over World Cup co-hosts New Zealand.<\/p>\n

Stajcic guided the Philippines to a debut World Cup appearance \u2013 men\u2019s or women\u2019s, and after losing to Switzerland in their first match, he masterminded a maiden tournament win on Tuesday night.<\/a><\/p>\n

And the emotional Australian declared it \u201chas to be one of the biggest wins in the history of sport in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

After being unceremoniously axed as Matildas coach in 2019 after an internal cultural review, Stajcic took charge of the minnows in October 2021.<\/p>\n

Now the world\u2019s 46th-ranked team have announced themselves on the world stage with a 1-0 win over New Zealand in front of 32,357 in Wellington.<\/p>\n

The Philippines took the lead in the first half with a Sarina Bolden header, before holding off wave after wave of Football Ferns attacks, with NZ burned by a razor-thin off-side call after putting the ball into the back of the net.<\/p>\n

Player of the match Olivia McDaniel made a string of saves including a stoppage-time stunner to ensure the underdogs would hold onto a maiden clean sheet and victory.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just staggering, miraculous, and unbelievable. What the players have done, it\u2019s just mind-blowing,\u201d Stajcic said.<\/p>\n

Comparing his side to NZ, who finally won their first World Cup match last week in their sixth tournament and 16th game, he said: \u201cTo think we\u2019ve done it in our second match at our first World Cup, you can\u2019t really appreciate how far we\u2019ve come.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s pretty raw. It was very emotional out on the pitch. Just seeing just about everyone, every staff member, every player crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

And in his typical humorous fashion, the Aussie claimed that he hadn\u2019t been crying – instead cheekily blaming everyone else.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got everyone else\u2019s tears all over my eyes,\u201d he said, wiping his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a special moment in the history of Philippines team sport,\u201d Stajcic continued, comparing their success to boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if there\u2019s been a bigger win. Obviously Pacquiao individually but for team sport, it would have to be one of the best achievements in the history of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stajcic led the Matildas to their first-ever World Cup knockout win in 2015 and secured a best-ever world ranking of fifth for Australia, and has also enjoyed success at club level with the Sydney FC women and Central Coast Mariners men.<\/p>\n

But he says this moment was unmatched in his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can you top beating a host nation at a World Cup? It\u2019s number one,\u201d said Stajcic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very emotional out on the pitch, seeing just about everyone crying. It\u2019s unbelievable. When you hear stories of other teams needing so long to win World Cup matches \u2026 We have done it in our second match in our first World Cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t really appreciate how far back in the pack we have come compared to these teams. The unity, work rate and heart from the team was special.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if there\u2019s been a bigger win for Philippines\u2019 sport. It has to be one of the biggest wins in the history of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Olivia McDaniel said: \u201cIt means everything to us.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe knew that New Zealand were going to come in hard off the momentum from their win against Norway, but we couldn\u2019t have asked for better.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t stop now, we have much more work to do,\u201d McDaniel added.<\/p>\n

And scorer Sarina Bolden declared: \u201cAlen, he\u2019s a brilliant man.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has given us a lot of knowledge. He has taught us a lot of things that are just so valuable that I\u2019ll take them for the rest of my life as a footballer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s because of him, but a big majority also goes to the players for sacrificing so much, giving themselves to this, and trusting each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Philippines will progress to the knockout stages with a win over 1995 champions Norway on Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
