{"id":54043,"date":"2023-08-11T01:40:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-11T01:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/11\/how-bizarre-world-cup-kick-off-exposed-arrogant-americas-425m-disaster\/"},"modified":"2023-08-11T01:40:00","modified_gmt":"2023-08-11T01:40:00","slug":"how-bizarre-world-cup-kick-off-exposed-arrogant-americas-425m-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/11\/how-bizarre-world-cup-kick-off-exposed-arrogant-americas-425m-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"How bizarre World Cup kick off exposed arrogant America\u2019s $425m disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t supposed to be like this. <\/p>\n<p>It was all fixed for the United States Women\u2019s National Team to be playing a Women\u2019s World Cup quarter-final in a prime time slot for TV viewers back home. <\/p>\n<p>Instead, it is Spain and the Netherlands facing each other for a spot in the semi-finals \u2014 at the bizarre time of 11am (AEST) in Wellington. <\/p>\n<p>The fixture is perhaps the most striking symbol of America\u2019s miserable campaign because of what a ratings disaster it will be for national broadcast rights holder Fox Sports USA.<\/p>\n<p>All the broadcaster\u2019s best laid plans were blown up when the American team struggled through to the knock-out stages as the runner-up in Group E. <\/p>\n<p>Almost everybody \u2014 particularly in America \u2014 had planned for the USWNT to finish top of the pool \u2014 a result that would have put them in the US TV-friendly time slot of a 12pm (AEST) game in Sydney for their second round match.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Netherlands fans prepare to face Spain in Wellington. It was a fixture that most of America failed to tune in for, played at 5am New York time. <\/p>\n<p>American also played two of its three group stage matches from 11am (AEST) in New Zealand \u2014 the only team to play two early fixtures during the group stage. <\/p>\n<p>The pattern emerging is that there was a clear path for the United States to play almost all of their matches early in the day time in Australia and New Zealand &#8211; to accommodate TV audiences back home.<\/p>\n<p>The scheduling also looked after Fox Sports, who paid a staggering $425 million for the rights to host a swath of FIFA tournaments, including the 2026 Men\u2019s World Cup \u2014 which will be hosted in the USA, Canada and Mexico \u2014 and the 2023 Women\u2019s World Cup. <\/p>\n<p>It was all going so well. With the friendly 11am (AEST) group stage time slots \u2014 a 6pm kick-off for viewers in Los Angeles \u2014 the tournament was a smash ratings winner for the sports network. <\/p>\n<p>Even the uber-unfriendly time slot for the team\u2019s final group stage match against Portugal attracted 1.3 million viewers \u2014 making it the most watched overnight telecast in Fox Sports history. <\/p>\n<p>Even with that match played at 3am, the American team\u2019s group stage matches had average ratings of 4,345,000 viewers on Fox, making it the most-watched Women\u2019s World Cup group stage ever on U.S. English language television. <\/p>\n<p>2.52 million people watched the USA get knocked out by Sweden with a peak audience of more than four million viewers, <a href=\"https:\/\/frontofficesports.com\/foxs-audience-drops-21-for-uswnts-world-cup-exit\/\" title=\"frontofficesports.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to Fox Sports<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Megan Rapinoe sent her penalty into the second tier. Photo by WILLIAM WEST \/ AFP.<\/span><span>Source: AFP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even that number was down by 21 per cent on the team\u2019s Round of 16 match four years ago \u2014 because of the poor time slot, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/frontofficesports.com\/fox-sports-and-fox-news-have-split-narratives-on-womens-world-cup\/\" title=\"frontofficesports.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> Front Office Sports<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Reporter Michael McCarthy wrote succinctly: \u201cWhat makes matters worse is that if the favoured USWNT had won their Group Stage as expected, their games would have aired in ratings-friendly prime-time windows in the U.S. Instead, Team USA went out early with a whimper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll Fox can do is dream about what might have been if the favoured USWNT had pulled off a historic three-peat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also doesn\u2019t help that the team has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/sport\/football\/never-seen-that-world-cup-photo-leaves-united-states-in-meltdown\/news-story\/512b2185dec3267b7a0904e0fb483d49\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">mercilessly attacked by football and social commentators back home<\/a>. There was in fact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/sport\/football\/world-cup\/yes-bye-rival-kicks-us-big-mouths-while-theyre-down\/news-story\/1152c002bd8d0c9d0bcc5c8cbf21b7c8\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">celebrations in some pockets of the USA when Megan Rapinoe\u2019s career ended <\/a>with the misery of a missed penalty. <\/p>\n<p>Photos of seeing Spain and Netherlands fans at Sky Stadium on Friday morning (AEST) will be a slap in the face for America and Fox Sports \u2014 especially after the network\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidethegames.biz\/articles\/1138964\/fifa-world-cup-broadcast-fee-shortfall\" title=\"www.insidethegames.biz\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">chief executive Eric Shanks last month spoke about how ad sales were up a whopping 50 per cent<\/a> from the 2019 tournament.<\/p>\n<p>He also came out and said what everyone was thinking about the American team\u2019s scheduling. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s a big reason why FIFA realised that it\u2019s probably better for the US national team to be based in New Zealand,\u201d Shanks said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Not like this. Photo by Quinn Rooney\/Getty Images.<\/span><span>Source: Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOne of the reasons probably is that time zone\u2019s much more friendly to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we\u2019ll have the early games while they\u2019re in New Zealand starting at like 9pm Eastern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then it kinda gets a little bit all over the place; they\u2019re either gonna be primetime games or fairly earlier in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It makes it particularly painful for the viewers back home that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/sport\/football\/us-soccer-team-roasted-over-incredibly-cocky-world-cup-ad\/news-story\/ae8ad62d56fb4d371bb91baecb525ab5\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Fox Sports\u2019 now-infamous \u201ccocky\u201d pre-tournament ad has resurfaced<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The 2027 Women\u2019s World Cup rights could be anything after the hot and cold results from the USWNT. Fifa also failed quite spectacularly in its declaration of reaching global TV rights figures worth $USD300 million and instead had to settle for an amount reported to have been worth around $200 million. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a very different story in Australia, obviously. <\/p>\n<p>The Matildas\u2019 run through to the quarter-finals has smashed all ratings records. More <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/sport\/football\/world-cup\/matildas-vs-denmark-shatters-the-tv-rating-record-books-for-2023\/news-story\/4ea7e92fa97e9b0223f031a8b40a70ba\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">than 3.5 million watched the Aussies defeat Denmark in the Round of 16<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com.au\/football\/how-bizarre-world-cup-kick-off-exposed-arrogant-americas-425m-disaster\/news-story\/c26b31b5ee33793abec3107d23e13422\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It wasn\u2019t supposed to be like this.
