The tension. The agony. The ecstasy. <\/p>\n

After the longest penalty shootout in World Cup history, the Matildas are through to the semi-finals for the first time by beating France 7-6 on Saturday<\/a> to set up a meeting with Colombia or England.<\/p>\n

Mackenzie Arnold was the hero in goals for Australia with a number of spectacular saves, even before the penalty shootouts even got underway.<\/p>\n

Cortnee Vine, meanwhile, had the final say as she made history with the game-winning penalty to write her name into football folklore. <\/p>\n

A moment so special that John Aloisi \u2014 the man behind the greatest moment in Australian sporting history \u2014 was more than happy to admit this one surpassed his game-winning goal against Uruguay back in 2005.<\/p>\n

\u201cWow! I don\u2019t think I have ever seen a penalty shoot-out like that before,\u201d Aloisi said post-game on Channel 7.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt ebbed and flowed, who was going to win, who was going to stand up. Mackenzie Arnold, who was enormous all night, making those saves, she takes potentially the winning penalty, hits the post and then she saves one. Drama, drama. This is what sport does, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m speechless. What have we just witnessed? I don\u2019t have words,\u201d Matildas veteran Elise Kellond-Knight added.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow everyone just stood up right there, I don\u2019t think I have seen a penalty shoot-out go to 10 penalty-takers at this level before… so many moments where we could\u2019ve won the game. <\/p>\n

\u201cGoing second as the penalty-takers is usually horrendous. We had so many game- winning moments but we held on, held on, then Vine to step up. Johnny, commiserations, you just got relegated to second most epic penalty shoot-out.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was no need to apologise to Aloisi though.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy to be relegated,\u201d he laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in a semi-final. This is what a World Cup does on home soil it brings everyone together. The nation together. Everyone\u2019s following the Matildas. Everyone\u2019s behind them. \u201cEveryone\u2019s believing they can go all the way and just this, this winning penalty from Vine, it gives you that belief that they can go all the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ange Postecoglou had sent a warning ahead of this year\u2019s World Cup, telling reporters last month that what happens after the spotlight fades will be more important than anything else.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere it is right now it\u2019s where it\u2019s been many times. It\u2019s what happens from now on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAustralian football has been pretty good, always, at making a mark. Sonny mentioned 2015 \u2013 we won the Asian Cup and barely a ripple.<\/p>\n

\u201cParticularly with the girls, it\u2019s getting great exposure all over the world \u2014 in the UK, great exposure over there \u2014 and a great chance to make an impact. The Socceroos, I thought, were brilliant at the World Cup [in Qatar]. The A-League\u2019s producing some good young players.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about the game taking advantage of that and making an indelible footprint in the sporting landscape here, which we know is always challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aloisi though is confident that this historic moment and what is to come will make more than just a ripple.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will inspire a future generation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what the girls spoke about before the tournament and during the tournament and they\u2019re living this moment. You know what? They will remember this for the rest of their lives. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a special time for them, for Australian football, for the whole nation, but we don\u2019t want it to stop here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matildas legend Heather Garriock, meanwhile, said she was \u201cwatching with tears\u201d on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the former Matildas up there. We were just so emotional. I can\u2019t hold my tears back,\u201d she told Channel 7.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so proud of this team. So proud of what we\u2019ve achieved. We missed it. We went through obstacles. Clare Hunt could\u2019ve won the penalty shoot-out. She didn\u2019t. Then who would\u2019ve thought, Cortnee Vine would be the John Aloisi! Of the Matildas! How good is that?<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not that we couldn\u2019t believe or anyone couldn\u2019t believe it. We all believed! It was a matter of, could we overcome the French? And gee that was a tough game. It was tight. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut this man just here, Tony Gustavsson, he\u2019s believed all along. We love his animation. His charisma. He\u2019 done such a great job with this team, and wow, I can\u2019t believe we\u2019ve created history.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
