It appears England have somehow got away with murder in the Women\u2019s World Cup final after goalkeeper Mary Earps saved a penalty despite appearing to be off her line early.<\/p>\n

Spain defeated the Lionesses 1-0<\/a> in a tense final to claim their first women\u2019s World Cup trophy \u2014 becoming the first nation to win both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s titles.<\/p>\n

Spain took the lead midway through the first half when captain Olga Carmona struck a sublime finish into the bottom corner to put her side up 1-0.<\/p>\n

The Spaniards had a chance to go 2-0 up when England\u2019s Keira Walsh conceded a penalty for a handball in the second half.<\/p>\n

But England goalkeeper Mary Earps dove low to her left to save the penalty kick by Mariona Caldentey.<\/p>\n

Earps was pumped up and celebrated the save, but fans weren\u2019t convinced her clutch stop was entirely legal.<\/p>\n

Replays appeared to show both of Earps\u2019 feet were in front of the goal line when Caldentey made contact with the ball from the penalty spot.<\/p>\n

Remarkably, the mistake wasn\u2019t picked up by VAR and there was no instruction to replay the penalty, like when Mackenzie Arnold had to in the Matildas\u2019 penalty shootout against France.<\/p>\n

In a statement, FIFA said Earps\u2019 back foot was touching the line and the correct call was made.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs with all penalties, the Video Assistant Referee checked Spain\u2019s penalty for encroachment by the goalkeeper and determined that Mary Earps\u2019 back foot was in line with the goal line,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

Socceroos legend John Aloisi said on Channel 7: \u201cI\u2019m\u00a0surprised that she didn\u2019t get to\u00a0retake this. Her feet had gone over\u00a0the line before. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not allowed\u00a0to move off the line early. That is\u00a0why she was able to save it.\u201d<\/p>\n

One stunned viewer tweeted: \u201cNot officiating the game properly in a world cup final is crazy, Mary Earps was off her line when the pen was taken.\u201d<\/p>\n

A second said: \u201cDefinite penalty and Earps was off her line. Should have been retaken. SPAIN ROBBED.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another said: \u201cWhy did VAR not make them retake the pen. Earps miles off her line when the ball is struck. VAR once again proving it is not fit for purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earps\u2019 save shifted the momentum slightly in England\u2019s favour as they searched for an equaliser deep into the second half.<\/p>\n

But Spain held on for a 1-0 victory as they clinched a historic World Cup triumph.<\/p>\n

Earps was awarded the Golden Gloves award as the tournament\u2019s best goalkeeper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
